Only having my ML320 for 2 weeks I was interested to see the MPG, after filling up the tank full on friday night, I was a little suprised that driving locally over the weekend in North West London I used nearly a quater of a tank to do 32.5miles. So I decided to fill up to see what MPG I had got and it worked out at 13 MPG. I suppose it's due to doing lots of stop start small journeys, still slightly disappointing.

You really need a Prius, ML is not meant for urban driving, try motorway driving and if you consious about mpg, disable the trip computer or don't look at it.

Yup you're not going to get economical stop/start driving from a 2.5 tonne (?) 4x4! Diesels take a fair while to warm up, too.

It will be better on longer runs.

As above a big engined auto petrol 4X4 in town traffic = not very good fuel

On a run my ML350 (a 3.7) does 25 to 28mpg local short trips its anywhere from 17mpg.

Even towing our van at a steady 60mph I managed 18mpg

I'm not particularly light footed either as the car makes a great sound :)

If your worried then maybe LPG is the way forward, depend on your millage and how long you intend to keep?

I only do 6K a year so 20mpg overall makes little difference than if I got 30mpg say

It's not that I'm worried about the consumption just disappointed that a fair few people told me I would get around 17mpg, I was hoping for 15mpg. But the car is super for urban driving as can see over most cars in traffic and over the top of cars parked on corners, that in my old car was a nightmare to pull out as couldn't see if cars were coming.

I must say one thing I love and my brother and dad commented on was how good the engine sounds when you accelerate. I only do around 8000miles so not too bad. But when I posted about getting the car you were totally right when you said I would love it :-)

Could it be the fact its new to you....

Are you use to an Auto?

you maybe finding your prodding the go pedal a little hard as your getting use to the car? It may well setle down a little when your driving normally... :)

I'm pretty light footed with this car, I wasn't very light footed with the BMW. One thing is sure even if it does 13mpg, I love the car far more than my 3 series I traded in :-) My wife is very happy with the car, maybe she has been flooring it when I'm not in the car!

Take one ML320, add 4 adults, 2 dogs and a stack of luggage and get over three times the mileage you have got.
The big factors here are:
It was out of town.
It was a diesel.
I was driving so that I didn't have to scrape collie off the inside of the rear windows!;)

Not much difference between 15mpg & 17mpg IMHO.....both are poor...

Oh well I’ve wanted this car for years so regardless of fuel consumption I am very happy to have it. I'm going to central France for a week in August to visit my wife's family, 400 miles door to door, it will be interesting to see the fuel consumption on a nice run.

I remember a few years ago, I had left the Euro tunnel and there was an Irish registered ML55 AMG driving in front of me and I was doing 100mph, the guy in front of him pulled over and he drove off, I can't imagine how fast he went as even though I was doing 100mph he just shot off into the distance and disappeared and I could see for a bout a mile or more, can't imagine what fuel consumption he got driving that speed.

On a run using cruise it will be ok

I've been over to Europe a few times and on around 2K miles I was getting 25mpg to 28mpg. 2 Adults, baby, and all the stuff that goes with that.

I had a great blast with a Q7 and GL320Cdi , on the toll road in bewteen these two I saw 135 on the speedo....

I doubt that was very good for fuel but very solid and three big off roaders in convoy bobbing on was fun.

FWIW

I have an S500L and my recent consumptions are 18mpg in town/short journeys and 30mpg on the motorway (at 70).

I did 170 miles today (Glasgow - Pitlochry - Glasgow) and averaged out 30mpg.

Not bad at all for a 17 foot car with a 5 litre V8 having 100k on it.
