Hi Alfie,
More a question really, but wasn't Mercedes-Benz showing off a design concept type theme for both the SL and SLK being fitted with a CDI engine. These were one off vehicles for the motor shows.

It was posted on MBSpy some years ago about the diesel engine going into the SL. MB put the date back...and back due to public perception.

Mentioned this to Salesmanager at local dealer when R130 launced. Oh how he scoffed.

Me thinks his scoffs might be out of ignorance!

I suppose the Diesel AMG is also 'pie in the sky' talk?

I can certainly envisage these new V engines going into the SL range. The torque of the V8 will be very impressive, and for a big engine it will also be very economical.

Just read this on the Top Gear site:

Mercedes has presented a brace of high-tech performance diesel engines - in the SL and SLK.

What would once have seemed unthinkable has become reality thanks to the company's position as one of the world leaders in diesel technology.

And both cars use developed versions of engines already in production:


SLK 320 CDI: tri-turbo V6 diesel with 282bhp and 465lb ft. 0–62 in 5.3 secs, 37.7mpg - and SL 55 AMG styling


SL 400 CDI: modded 4.0-litre V8 diesel allows 0–62 in 5.8 seconds

The company also displayed a variety of diesel-powered production models, including versions of the new B and M-Classes.

"The potential of Mercedes-Benz' modern diesel engines is still far from fully exploited," it says. "Diesel technology will be attracting even more attention in the future."
