As a newcomer to your site and MB owner, I've come across some problems with the laquer on my slk alloys. Local MB Dealer says this is a common fault and as the vehicle is now 5 years old, there is nothing MB will do to assist with the cost of repair. Has anyone else had the same problem? If so do i just have to pay up or has anyone got MB to assist? Thanx!

Got the same problem with mine, and probably going to have them refurbed at some point, or just swap them for some bigger ones.

It is particularly common to this style of wheel.

...and looks worse depending on what angle you look at the wheels from - you have to look at them straight on to really notice it in my case.

Not heard of anybody who has got MB to pay up for a refurb outside of the warranty period, but if you have had the car from new, then its worth a try - there might be a chance of a goodwill gesture / part payment.

waaaaaaaaaaaah - hope this doesn't happen to mine:( although I've got a few years yet - will have to keep a close eye - see if anything shows before the warranty expires:(

Edited - sorry - should have first said Welcome to the group - we're not a bad bunch - well I'm Ok - not sure about tall the others tho;)

i got a brand new set last sept after i wrecked two rims. i'll be watching my new ones closely. my old set (6 yr old) were in bad condition and in need of a refurb.

Impressed with the site. Even more so with the prompt replies. Thanks!
Goodwill gesture offered. We'll do it at cost! c. £45 each. Hmmm?

That sounds pretty good. If they'll lend you a set of wheels to use while they are refurbing yours, then go for it. Have had some quotes for refurbishment, and nothing cheaper than that.

It does sound a good price. They must be feeling some guilt about the condition, see what else they will offer by playing disappointed. ;)

My wheels of the same design were cracking after 3 years - laquer only though.

From looking at other cars of the same age, if you find those wheels and there is no sign of cracking, then they have been re-painted or re-laquered already.

This seems happens regardless of there being no curbing damage.

:( :bannana:

This is a well known problem with both pre and post facelift SLK 230 wheels. I had mine changed twice once at 1 year and again at 3 years under warranty.

When it got to three years they wanted to offer refurbs and I refused and took it to MB as they had knowingly sold a defective product and they gave me a new set.

I would say push the dealers for a different alloy if you're still under warranty as I don't think it happens with the SLK 320 wheels.

Good luck!

'orrible Alloys

My SLK alloys are now 7 years old and look very sorry for themselves. They delaminated from the centre.

I have lived with them but am am keen to repair prior to sale. Can anyone suggest anywhere in/near London to get these repaired?

Many thanks,
RichA
