we have an SLK 55AMG, its two years old with 6K on clock and smokes like a chimney on cold start up, currently having discussions MB who say this is standard for this engine?? Has anyone else experienced similar sorts of problems? Any comments appreciated.

I have basically the same engine in my CLK .. it has never smoked on cold start up.

Of course, when it is really cold, it blows clouds much like breathing in cold weather.

it does blow white smoke in cold winter mornings but this is blue oil smoke

that does not sound great in car/engine of age you detail. Lets hope MB recognise that too.

I have a video clip of mine starting, and it never blew out smoke.

The rocker cover bolts were loose and needed tightening at 6000miles tho. Tell tale oil seeps down to the exhaust ports on the cylinder block. Take a look and see if yours has the same, it looked like it came from the oil filler, but taking off the engine cover showed it came from the sealant.

The car needed a ltr of oil about this point too.

Some of the 113 and 112 engines do smoke on a cold start up. Believe me I have started a few.

It has always been deemed as normal.

Some do and some dont. I have seen brand new 55's with "0" miles do it time and time again.

Thats not normal, I've had my hands on loads of these and they don't smoke like that maybe some white when stone cold but never blue.

Your well within your warranty period just take it back, use another dealer if you need to but most will recognize anything blue as a problem without prompting.

Thanks for all the responses, by the looks of things some smoking is not unusual, although I do think its a little exessive, according to MB they do allow for 1ltr of oil usage over 6K. The matter has now been referred to AMG Germany together with video footage for further consideration. I will keep you all posted, again thanks for the posts.

It's extraordinary how high an oil consumption manufacturers tolerate. One reads of new cars burning a litre per 1000 miles being told, "no problem - just keep it topped up" but not an AMG 5.4 litre surely - they're parts are supposed to be carefully matched

You wanna see how much oil an M5 uses ....

A litre per 1000 miles is a pretty common amount ....

Slightly off topic.

My 3.0 ltr 280 SLK never ever smokes in any way shape or form. Also, there is only ever the slightest, (absolutely miniscule) carbon deposit in the exhaust tips which is easily wiped away.

I have also noticed that pretty much all cars have soot of some sort and of varying degrees in the tips so, is mine running ok?, is it running artificaially lean or is that impossible these days? It seems to be very crisp at the moment and getting crisper with age, (just like me :D).

Portzy.

Sounds like all the other 280/350's i've seen to me.

Slinky what ever happened with the results from AMG on your 55 smoking at cold start up? Is it normal after all for some amg cars?
