Mercedes SLK 230 R170
Hi All

I have a 2000 SLK which I use as a 2nd (fun) car. I currently have a multi car policy and this enables me to share the no claims earned on my main policy

My renewal has just come through for the SLK at £311 (zero excess). Does this seem reasonable?

Does anyone have suggestions of specialist companies that maybe cheaper that would take into account my no claims on my main car?

Thanks in advance

Dan

Depends on your age and where you live, mileage etc...too many variables.

I also have a multi-car policy with the 2nd car only doing about 2,000 miles/year.

put the details in a compare website and see what it offers.

done the comparison website, but that doesn't really take into account that it is a second car and that you may not be able to use NCD that is used on primary car

I used to have an MG and there was a company I used that specialised in MG insurance for 2nd cars, didn't know if anyone had come across similar companies

Recently we were looking to purchase an approved used SLK from an MB dealership with delivery miles only - it had only 20 miles on the clock and pre-registered to the dealership 90 days earlier.

We rang my wife's insurance company, LV.com, and they very kindly offered to give her a new car policy matching her 9 years NCB on her existing car without having to take out a multicar policy. The price to insure a practically brand new SLK with LV for my wife and I to drive without handling over an earned NCB came to circa £300 with the usual £250 excess and 9000 miles annual mileage. After the first year with LV.com we would be able take this (additional) NCB earned on this new car elsewhere if we wish to.

I detest multi car policies on the grounds that it can get difficult to unpick when it is time to move onto another insurer since the premium of each car is 'locked' onto each other with different end dates. Much prefer it when the insurance company simply matches your NCB earned on another car!

This year I switched from AA to Direct Line and saved £30 on my CLK and £40 on my wife's Nissan Note, both 9 years NCB. You have to spend a few tedious hours online
but in the end it pays off.

Look at specialists like ClassicLine, Locktons etc. I have insured my "toy" (Porsche 968 cab) with ClassicLine for quite a few years, has to be a second car and you don't get NCD, but 2 named drivers and 5k miles is about £240pa, includes Europe full breakdown cover (and properly organised trackdays if that's any use to you!), agreed value (costs about £25 to get their valuation). If car is declared an insurance write-off you have the choice of 100% agreed value and they get the wreck, or 70% and you get the wreck - often a Cat D can be repaired for less than the 70%!!

I moved from LV to Admiral as LV can't match prices on renewals.

Admiral aligned all the renewal dates so no problem there.

LV.com not competitive for younger drivers, but much more competitive for older drivers. Wife and I are with LV.com, but both kids are with Admiral as they seem much more competitive for younger drivers.

That said we will consider moving younger daughter away from Admiral at her renewal this year since Admiral will cap her NCB earned to 5 years max which is pretty low compared to most of the major insurance company. Also they are a bit keen to put up insurance premium due to speed awareness courses. They didn't ask this question when we took out the insurance, but they did when we switched cars and needed to amend the insurance - they back charged the additional premium for attending speed aware courses back two years and we ended up paying an additional premium of nearly £200. Admiral wasn't so competitive after all!

I'm paying £213 on my SL , 9 years no claims discount but £500 excess with additional £300 voluntary excess ,, but hell of a saving this is with Esure , I also have my ML insured with them but not as multi car as crazily it was cheaper to insure seperatly ,,,,

I have not found the comparison websites to be useful.

You will have to spend time on the telephone talking to the specialist brokers......and it will very much depend upon how ''the mop flops'' on the day as to where the best value comes from.

Happily for the purposes of car insurance my wife and I are both of a certain age, both of us have maximum no claims bonuses and insurers fully understand that I drive considerately and gently at all times.......consequently, through Adrian Flux, I pay a total of £600/annum fully comp. over all three cars with the Volvo being on class 1 business use. The SL does circa 12k miles/yr., the SLK and the Volvo circa 5k miles/yr. each.........aggregate 22k miles/yr.

All three cars are daily drivers.

I have found that fiddling with the excesses makes little or no difference; where you live and where the cars are kept overnight will effect premiums.

As the second Poster said......too many variables for there to be a definitive answer.

There is a ''knock on'' effect year on year so it is always worth working hard to get the premiums down to an absolute minimum.......defines next years ''starting point''.

Doesn't sound too bad to me and surely that takes no claims into account. But its difficult to comment without knowing your age, type of SLK, annual mileage etc?

Fair point about excesses, although I suspect this would depend on individual insurance companies. With LV.com, their accesses are in increments of £50, and increasing it or decreasing it will typically cost around £15 to £20 and the sweet spot for me is around £150. Less than this and the increment in insurance premium shoots up and above the decrement in insurance premium drops below £7.

In the final analysis it will be up to individuals to determine if is it worth an increment of £10 (typically) to cover £50 worth (less in excesses). For the safe driver probably not, but for the accident prone driver making several claims per year this is might be worth it.

seems reasonable, I have an SLK230, fully comp, bonus protected, 12000 miles / annum, inc commuting for £350.

I'm 43, do about 4k per year, live in N London. From doing online quotes, it actually does not seem that bad. Can find for c£250, but excesses are high, whereas my quote is with £100 excess

On my MG I had the sort of policy Chrishazle is talking about which was really cheap, will give the 2 suggestions a call tomorrow and see what they say

Here is an update on companies and prices you may find useful

Existing multi car quote through AXA was £311

Then got 3 specialist classic car quotes with 4K miles restriction, Social and commuting to one place of work.

Adrian Flux - £100 excess, no breakdown cover - £235

Classic Line - £250 excess, includes UK & European breakdown - £249

RH Classic Insurance - £150 excess, includes UK & European breakdown - £234

RH seems the best bet and all far cheaper than AXA multi car quote
