SLK - buying advice

Sorry, no idea what its worth but it looks like a nice car. I've seen a few decent looking cars up for sale by that company and they have always come over very well. I'd be interested to hear how you like them.

I've seen a few SLKs on ebay recently at what look like good prices that just haven't sold - one example being a 2002 SLK320 with under 50k miles and £14000, since reduced to £13000 buy it now, and a 2004 low mileage 320 at £20k no reserve. If you look on the completed listings you'll see a lot that aren't sold. £12K doesn't look unreasonable provided it's in top condition but it still might struggle. Red is not a popular colour. I also very much doubt that it cost over £35k new - more like £32K if he paid full list (Edit: I missed to AMG body. It probably was £35K. This does make the car more attractive IMO and is not that common especially on the face-lift ones that have body coloured side skirts anyway)

I see on this car that it had a 2 year gap between the last 2 services, and then the last service was done at a independant (might not be a bad thing). Should enquire to find out why, and what work was carried out.

Like i said, it might not be a bad thing, but invoices backing things up will show its been cared for. Good luck with your search!

nice colour combination, if you like it, which I do.

also, it does not have an AMG bodykit, only AMG wheels

however, it is not metallic silver or some other dark or popular metallic, and therefore has a limited market.

It's a good spec, but not sensational.

like someone else has said, the R170 has really come down in prices recently. I think £12,000 is near the peak for the car. It should not be more than £11,000 really, especially as Christmas is approaching ...

I missed the mileage and service thing.

It had FMBSH until 52,000 miles. Then it went 26 months without a service and only has 62,000 and was serviced by a specialist. This car sounds like it has been clocked to me... others thoughts?

I doubt that. The car can easily do 10k between services and I know the time limit is more than 2 years because I haven't serviced mine in about 2 years and it's still showing 2k to the next servcie.

I bought a W-Reg SLK (July 2001 registered) a couple of months back and I paid £15k which seemed a lot but it had only done 36k miles, and they gave me a really good part ex. price on my previous car. I bought through a independant dealership due to the warranty offered which was good for me as I don't really know much about cars!

I didn't want to part with my cash in a private sale to then find out 2 weeks down the line the car's got serious electronical problems!

I did most of my looking around on autotrader, which is always a pretty good guide for getting a feel for prices.

Parkers.com also gives you an idea of what you should be paying.

Looked at the photo's and the car looks in immaculate condition. I think it will sell privately for about £14.5k. It might go for less due to the colour, but some people may like that. I wasn't quite that daring and went for silver metallic with black leather.

My SLK spec is pretty much identical to yours....and I've got to say I've been really pleased with the car and in my opinion well worth the money.

The heated seats are a bonus in winter, as you can still get the roof down!...and trust me, you will be getting the roof down as often as you can!

Good luck in your search.

Let us know how much the car goes for, I'd be interested to hear the result.

my daughters car was written off by someone else. The insurance company paid 'market value' based on the cars on the autotrader website. I therefore always use that as a price guide. You can get near-as-dammit to the identical model.

Thanks for all the advice. I am staying away from that RED SLK above as it is red and the service/mileage just doesnt add up to me.

I have been to look at an SLK today. It is as follows;

2000 (W) not facelift, 230k, Auto, 44,000 miles, Full Service history (All from MB with only 1 as a specialist - Genuine miles)Linarite Blue, AMG Body Kit, AMG wheels, AMG Chrome exhuat end, Leather interior, Tracker, Alarm, CD player, Cruise control, Airbags, Heated Mirrors, 4 New Pirelli Tyres, long MOT.

It has some wear of the biege plastic coated interior (it doesnt have full leather trim) it has gone a bit black. Sounds a lot worst than it is. A few stones chips but should all polish out.

It is up for £13,200 . I have offered over a £1000 less and he is getting back to me. Can anyone advice please. It is by far the best one I have looked at.

Thanks.

I thought ASSYST would count down time if mileage is not high enough so that you require a service at least once every 2 years ... this at least has been the issue re:rust warranty claims

There is a time limit because I hit that before the B service and it was less than 2 years I think. However, I've gone over 2 years now with no time limit coming up. The next service is an A. I've given up trying to figure out this ASYST system or whatever it's called. I'm just grateful for service intervals as long as possible so I can avoid going to the useless dealer.

BTW, that SLK went for £13k !!! People must like the red, or maybe it's the AMG bodykit. You can do much better for that price.

13k it went for and it says it has AMG body but it doesn't.

I picked up a 2000 W REG with an AMG body, linarite blue, imaculate body (few light scratches before I bought it - but have taken them all out), leather 2 tone, 230k, AMG wheels and exhaust pipe. Superb condition (I saw 8 SLK's and this was by far the best), only 43,000 with FMBSH (100% not clocked like so many are). I managed to get it for £12,250 and it is much better than that 13k ebay one. So I am pleased.

Thanks for all of your advice.
