Hello , this is my first post , my clutch has done 76000 miles. 1st and reverse gears are a bit stiff to engage , i was wondering should the clutch be replaced or are they good for 100000 miles.

Is it worth replacing the gearbox oil obviously this would be a cheaper option to start with. Has anyone changed there gearbox oil ? i understand access to the filling hole is difficult.

Thankyou for any advice.

Welcome to the forum :)

If the clutch is not slipping then it probably does not need replacing, there is no set mileage for how long a clutch lasts, it is all down to the type of driving and the operator. My Audi A6 had the clutch replaced for the first time at 215,000 miles.

I am unsure if the clutch on youir car is hydraulic, if so then may help, if cable then an adjustment or lubrication / cable replacement may be required.

The first thing I would look at is the gearbox linkage as it may be worn or out of adjustment Do you have a local MB specialist who could look at the car?

I agree, unless it is slipping why change it? Look for another reason for the difficulties with first and reverse.

SLK manual is known for being baulky when cold

This thread might help.

I would first renew the gearbox oil ensuring that the correct grade is used and the level is spot on.

Mines the same on my CLK 230K. Looks like I'll drop the oil and get some Redline MTL. Clutch works fine, although look out for the dodgy aluminium bracket that snaps on the clutch pedal return mechanism.

Just dropped some of the oil out of my gearbox today. It looks like treacle but has the viscosity of petrol. Mileage is 142,000 and it looks like it's probably the original oil. Job was quite easy, you'll need a 14mm allen key and you'll probably have to remove the exhaust bracket bolted to the underside of the gearbox (if it's the same as the clk) to get to the fill plug. I'll update once I've replaced the oil with some newly purchased redline MTL.

Hi,
Just an update on the gearbox oil. The Redline MTL arrived this morning, £14.20/litre bottle (bought 2 for £28.40 all in, next day delivery). So I propped the car up, dropped the original oil - like black water and pumped in the new stuff - approx 1.2 - 1.3 litres instead of the original 1.5 litres. The drain plug has a magnet fitted in the centre so when I took it out a took a photo of it so you can see what it was like - looks like metal micky's wig.
Anyhow, just took it for a spin and I'm quite impressed. 2nd gear is still a bit notchy compared to the other gears, but overall the gear changes feel much better. The best way to described it is it feels softer and more padded instead of being more clicky.
I don't know when it was last changed (if ever) but it is definitely a great improvement when changing gear and I'm glad I did it. Anyone wants a description on how to do it, let us know.
