SLK Key programming

Hi again, I have hunted through the forum but can't find anything on doing this for an SLK.

I have two square two button flip key style remotes. One is perfect but the other didn't work remotely. - The key does start the car (I don't know if its chipped etc on this car)

Reading the handbook, it mentioned the red light which didn't light up so I have replaced the batteries with CR2032s and now the red light comes on.

The handbook also mentioned I needed to press either one of the buttons twice then within 30 seconds, turn the ignition to stage 2 and it will all work but...... it doesn't.

Are there any other ways anyone knows how to do this on a 99 SLK as I didn't really want to have to buy a key when I have one. Also the handbook seems to imply I can still access the car with it armed by using just a key then turning it to stage 2 will disarm it and allow normal use of the car. - Is this also correct.

depending on the year you have to press lock/unlock and then lock and unlock manually in the door handle
