Guys,

Different SLK's come with different options and hence the number of switches can differ (the minimum is 3 I believe). Can someone tell me function of the sixth black switch is in the centre console in the picture - From memory, I know two are heated seats, one is tow, one is traction (ESP), one is lock doors... what is the sixth button for?

It's the Deactivate Tow-away Protection button, or, the Headlamp Cleaning button if you have that option fitted to your car. Two buttons are for the heated seats (Left and Right). The two remaing buttons are the ESP Off /On button, and last the Window/door Locking button. :)

Is it? I would have thought the tow-away button that I mentioned above would also provide the deactivation... for example, the lock all doors button, also serves as the unlock all doors and the heated seats can be turned on and off from the same button. It seems a bit odd that you would need a separate button to deactivate it?

Yup believe me take my word for it, the Tow away buton is what it is, the Lock window is also the doors. I only say this as I've Had two SLK R170s and my current for the last 8 years is the SLK32AMG and is fitted with these options ;) :thumb:

Oh and you have two buttons for the heated seats so they can be controlled individually,
e.g. the passenger may not want it on, and of course there is no point in heating an empty seat. ;)

Ok, so I would infer from that, that Traction (ESP) is not standard?? I thought it was.

Going by what you are saying, there is tow activation button, tow deactivation button and a lock all doors button. As there is a minimum of 3 buttons on all SLKs, that would mean traction is an added option - for the 200K at least? Cheers.

ESP is standard. What isn't standard on UK cars is Heated seats or Headlamp washers from memory. The TowACtivate/deactivate is one button. The Lock doors windows is one button.

Yowsers, I am more confused now, as I think we may be crossing wires here :D

Lets do this another way - Here are the list buttons I know:

1) Driver heatewd seat
2) Passenger heated seat
3) Lock doors
4) Traction (ESP)
5) Tow-away protection ON
6) ??

Is the sixth button here

6) Tow-away protection OFF
or
6) Head lamp wash

??

:D :D

Just so there is absolutely no doubt, here is a section copied out of my user manual - Simples :);)

woohoo, cheers dude. It's headlamp wash. Much appreciated for taking the time to scan in your user manual.

Now the bigger question: what the hell were Mercedes thinking about when they came up with headlamp wash. Really!

It's normally fitted to cars with Xenon headlights, I believe it's a requirement that cars with Xenons have a cleaning facility.

Err if you really want to know, the neat flushfit headlamp washers come out on stalks to clean the headlamps with a high pressure water jet when the headlamps get get covered in road film, salt/mud and work pretty well. And if you have Xenon headlamps as per fitted to my car, I think its a standard fitment, as are auto self levelling headlights, which is/was a legal requirement so as not to dazzel on coming traffic. (but don't quote me on that last point).

Just to clarify

I would just like to clarify a point made earlier.

The minimum number of switches is 1 (one).

I own a 1997 SLK200 and the only switch I have is the Central locking switch.

my model did not even come with ESP.:)

Regards
Stewart
