The interior rear view mirror fixing has detached itself from the windscreen. I have tried to glue it back on with Tetrion Mirror Fix Bond glue but this was unsuccessful. It would appear that it was originally fixed with a thin double sided clear tape. Has anyone had any success with bonding the mirror back on.
Thanks. Tommy

If it's like the R171, the only long-term solution is a new windscreen. Don't ask me how I know...

The Sikafast only lasted a year or so. I've no idea what the black stickum I referred to was, or I'd have bought some of that; it lasted longer than the Sikafast. There may be something available that actually does the job, but I spent quite a lot of time on the internet and never found it.

If you want mirrors to stay on you need one of the UV activated mirror glues....usually a UV-curing cyanoacrylate adhesive. Like the factory use. Nothing else lasts in my experience. Just use it on a sunny day otherwise it wont cure!

I would have thought that 3M may have something in their range to cope with that job.
That would be my view. Probably something from their VHB tape range:

I'd be tempted to call their tech support and ask them for advice. They may even post out a sample to try for free ;)

Due to the small area involved Id be surprised if any tape will last in that hot, UV prone position for much time at all.

You could well be right, but 3M VHB tapes have some quite extraordinary properties.

Contacting their tech support & asking for advice should clear it up one way or the other. They may also suggest an alternative adhesive for the application.

Gorilla double sided works well at all temperatures and strong enough for most jobs incl. dash cam mounts.

Not much UV available, though; the mount attaches to the screen inside the blacked-out area top centre.

The mirror unit is quite heavy compared to a dashcam, and with the stiff suspension on the R171 and Britain's ruined roads, I doubt it would last long.

I never thought of VHB tape. You'd need to be a dasb hand with a scalpel, though, because the actual contact area between mounting plate and screen is quite small. or at least, it is on the R171.

Good luck, and please let us know how you get on.

The mating surfaces would need to be very clean before mounting the mirror. I use a product called Metamark surface cleaner for jobs like this., it is used for cleaning when fitting large format graphics to shop windows Etc. I cleaned my windscreen with a good glass cleaner, then did it again with Metamark and was amazed by how much crap was on the cloth.

I used methylated spirits; it's not just a drink, you know.... :D
