When I press air con button it flashes then goes off.
Should it remain on,what am I doing wrong?

Yes, it should stay on.

Sounds like you have an aircon fault

I had a similar fault

1st fault turned out to be no gas and the second fault was a pressure sensor they are only15 quid from eBay

I would be checking these two faults before anything else
