I have recently purchased a 2000 SLK and notice that there is a small amount of rust on the inside of the petrol filler cap, and quite a lot of rust on the inside of the fuel filler pipe to the petrol tank.
Not sure whether this has been caused by a clumsy previous owner, or whether it is just poor quality Merc materials.
Left unattended it will only get worse, so I am inclined to do some gentle rubbing with a rag and WD40 for the area I can reach, but I am concerned about rust fragments dropping into the tank. Also, if I give it a liberal spray with WD40 - is there a risk that this will contaminate the petrol?
Has anyone else had this problem and any suggestions on the best way to deal with it?
Cheers, Tim
