I'm pulling what little hair I've got out... trying to find an answer as to whether the supercharger that Mercedes added to the 230K engine is an Eaton M62?

Have searched here and Google, and there are several people thinking or saying that it is, but nothing that says it with reassuring authority. Anyone here know categorically? Or point me at a Mercedes/supercharger specialist who would know?

FYI, I'm trying to source a good used supercharger to put on a 2.6 Mercedes 190E. The affordable sources are US-ones taken off of misc Buicks of the '90s, and 230K superchargers would give me more options to source from eithin Europe (and sort of 'keep it in the family')

All advice gratefully received :)

I've got a 1998 M111 C230K, its the earliest engine of them all, with an electromagnetic clutch which engages at 1500rpm and it is definately an M62 Eaton roots supercharger.

Same Year same engine but in a 230K CLK and definitely a M62 Eaton Supercharger, although mine has a modified pulley to give it more grunt.

Thanks fellas. :) One other reason that I like the idea of the 230K supercharger is because of that clutch - I intend to use the autobox's E/S selector with a relay to switch the SC in/out.

Don't suppose either of you has engine guts photos that give an idea of the SC position and associated plumbing? I'll try to google some up, too.

flanaia1: what sorts of feel do you get from the pulley swap? Is it an across the rev range improvement?

OK, more work-dodging research seems to show that there was a switchover to the M45 in the 230k engine. Appears to have happened around the SLK facelift intro (2000).

Which explains why the M45 is named for some of the used SCs on Ebay - like this one: MERCEDES 2.3 EATON M45 SUPERCHARGER on eBay (end time 24-Jun-09 18:36:02 BST)

So it seems I need to be careful...

That particular supercharger doesn't have an electromagnetic clutch, and i think its more effecient and smaller in size.

It says it has the E-clutch in the listing but i didnt think they did... interesting!

Mines coupled to a Manual box but it gives more torque on the bottom end and means I can get past 60 mph whilst in 2nd gear. The smaller pulley came as part of the Brabus K1 tuning package that was on the car from new, this upgrade also runs a larger intercooler on the SC side of things as well as modified exhaust (Actually made for Brabus by Remus). The Brabus upgrade means 3rd gear is also extremely flexible for long overtakes ;)

The engine managment on mine cuts the fuel before I hit 60 in 2nd on my C230K(also manual), although mine is the 1.8L with a 6speed box- is yours 5 or 6 speed, just out of interest?

Mine and flania's are 5speed and as a result might have longer gear ratios. I can hit 60 exactly in 2nd.

Also mine has the Brabus remap I can get about 63 - 65 (true) in second, will have to sort out and post the dyno graph

I wish i could still get hold of that kit... Do you still get problems with the supercharger shutting down?

I think you can still order it in via Japan can try and get details if you want. But its not cheap I think best part of £3k for everything, glad mine was on the car when I got it. No my supercharger now fine thanks, had all the pipework renewed and that completely cured the problem going like a dream at the moment (touch wood)

Interesting thoughts - the SC added to my 190E wouldn't have all of the 'smart' technology to manage it. It'd just be an 'old school' SC with the clutch manually operated. I've seen threads about running a smaller pulley, but I'm likely to start with the standard one unless the chap putting it in thinks the ratios would be too low.

Found some installation diagrams and photos at: SLK230 Engine

And here's a dimensioned drawing of the M62:
