Hi,
Need help on my gearbox fault ?

I have had my Slk 32 for 18 monthes it is a 2002/02 and has done just 31000 miles. 9000 only by us.

Last night it developed a gearbox fault, changes gear but the power has gone.
MB main dealer has told me today that its the gearbox ecu @ around £720 fitted, ouch !!
I have had a little winge and MB have agreed to pay the labour, I accepted it and have placed an order.

Thinking more about it I became more angry as I purchased this car through MB used car scheme and is a very low milage car.
I have rung MB customer service who are calling me back tommorrow, dont hold out much hope, any similar experiance with anybody ?

Does anybody know if I can have the unit repaired ?

Help is appreciated.

Thanks

First thing to ask is, are you sure its a gearbox fault?

When mine started changing gear and revving like mad and not much was happening, it was due to a faulty air sensor, causing reduced power from the engine. The gearbox was just trying to compensate for this!

How did the dealer diagnose the problem?

I was told that it was a current + logged fault.

Interested about what happened to you, could you tell me more?

also in the process of speaking to mb customer services, trying to persuade them to help out on the cost.

thanks

Matt

Well, theres not much else to tell. (Mine was an E300 TD). It started changing down and revving like mad on the motorway without gathering much speed everytime it came to a hill. The was no torque being generated. Changing the MAF solved it. It was intermittent, but there are other manifestations of MAF sensor failure - its a common discussion on this forum, so do a search and see if you think it ties in with what you're experiencing. Auto gearboxes doing strange things can be gearbox problems, but they can also be engine problems as well!

Plus the MAF does not show clearly on diagnostic.

I would settle for a wiring harness check.

If it is the gearbox ecu, you should have a word with BBA-reman.com- Tel No o1634 230055. I have been told that the cost of the components in an ecu is relatively small, that makers add a large cost for programming them. I once had an air sensor taken apart by an expert and he told me that the cost of components would have been less than £5, yet the car company's price was over £300.

Let's face it - everything starts as a bucket of dirt and a puddle of goop. So which one of us is going to make into something useful for nothing !

anyone know where the maf sensor is on the 32 engine ???

thanks
Matt

checking through the forum regarding maf sensors and the age + milage of my car I feel the symtoms are pointing to a maf sensor.

Merc have told me and ordered this gearbox ecu !

I just know they are going to fit the ecu and the fault will stil be there, is there a good chance the diag is wrong ????

Thanks

Matt

MAF is at rear of intake piping above throttle at rear of engine.
CRC make a MAF cleaning spray. Jusr spray liberally with this or use brake cleaner spray if not avaiable. Just spray thru sensor, shake dry and replace. Dont wipe or use comp air.

Ask on above link too, many 32 owners there

32's dont have MAF guys, they got MAP sensors.

whats a map sensor ?

Have you ever had problems ?

had the gearbox ecu fitted today, still not right.

back at mb as we speak, will keep you posted.

All fixed, turned out to be a water recirculating pump.

They said it had seized due to a wire grounding and this had spiked the gearbox ecu.

needed both parts..

thanks

Hmmmm, I wonder did you really need the ecu??....hope you kept the 'old' one!

because MB paid a big part of it they have kept it, I have quizzed them over this.

Hands are tied. working now and thats the main thing.

Reckon it had been spiked, more like I have been spiked.

It's worth a letter to Milton Keynes at the very least - hardly inspires confidence for future servicing.

Dont call me cynical  , but i wouldnt be surprised if you've still got your original ecu fitted!........might explain why MB couldn't return your 'old' one.
