Guys,
car is due 3 year major service next week.
Quoted £636.
Asked about supplying my own oil as some on here do I believe to save a few quid.
Supplying my own oil knocks £136 +vat off the total so sounds like a worthwhile thing to do.
I asked which oil and they told me Shell Helix low ash but she put me through to Parts to confirm and to be honest they did not seem to be very clued up.
"what car is it mate?"
SLK 55 AMG.
Talks to his oppo next to him who then asks
"Petrol or diese matel "
FFS. Its petrol I informed them.
"Just get 229.5"
So which Brand I enquired? Shell ? and what grade 5/40 ? I asked.
"Well we use Petronas"
Yep but what grade do I bring as I don't want to bring the incorrect oil.
"just 229.5 mate that's all"

So if anybody can confirm for me which brand would be best suited and a grade number ,I will ensure I get it and it has the 229.5 spec also. Also is 2x 5ltr,s enough or are they in 4ltr containers these days and would that suffice?
Is it me being thick or have things changed?
Thanks in advance guys.

IIRC its 229.51 but someone will be along to confirm it. Once you know, go onto the bay of dreams and look as mercedesbenzofnewcastle, mercedesbenzofedingburgh or mercedesbenzsouthendonthesea and buy your oil from them! They seem to have cracking deals on the oils and are normally around the 40-45 pound mark delivered.
Infact you can even send them your reg and they will ensure you get the correct oil & amount.
Its as easy as that :)

Thanks for the swift reply Abb.
Yep I get the 229.5 and have looked at a motor factors near me and they supply the Petronas oil 5/40 but website does not show the 229.5 bit in the spec sheet although the pic on their website shows the container with a Mercedes star on the front of it.
I will email one of the above you mentioned to get the correct one.
Ta.

It's not unheard of for manufacturers to change their recommended oil sometimes. When I get my Audi serviced I always phone parts just out of interest to see what oil they recommend (seems to change every time actually!).

"What car is it sir?"
"It's a V10 S8"
"Is that an S-Line?"
"Ermm, no! Let me just give you the VIN instead" :wallbash:

But as long you've got the right viscosity and it complies on the back of the oil container to the manufacturer then it should be fine.

I think he is telling me to read the firkin manual.
But as stated by someone already the spec and make does change which is why I asked on here.
Some people eh...!

I would usually reply
STFU...!

Having experienced this incompetence, why use a main dealer?
You can save yourself all the hassle of buying your own oil by using your local independent specialist. They will charge you fairly for parts, lubricants and labour and very possibly do the whole job at least as well if not better..

To be honest after this service I probably will.
There are a few bits I need doing ,ie AC refreshed as it does not blow cool enough, updates to the sat nav maps ,DAB radio update as it keeps dropping off the station so I thought get this done under warranty whilst being serviced .
Regards
Rob

You can get your air con sorted and your updates done (assuming your car is still under warranty and these items are covered) at the main dealer and still have your service carried out by a specialist.
Fact is, if you are looking to save money this is the way to go. If you use a main dealer but supply your own oil you won't exactly endear yourself..it's a bit like going to a restaurant and taking your own wine..don't expect maximum co operation..your choice..

Email AMG direct or through the private lounge website. Mobil 1 or petronas seem to be the preferred choice.

229.5 (229.51 is low ash referring to diesel primarily )
Doesn't matter a damn whether it's Mobil,Castro,Shell,Petronas or Fuchs, if it's 229.5 it's acceptable.Opie oils often have good deals too in 1 litre packs which is handy - buy enough for your service and a couple extra to keep in the boot!

Thanks for the replies guys.
I will stick with main dealer for this last one . Supplying oil myself.
Regards
Rob

I'm confused. I thought third year service was a mere oil change. Yr1 = A, oil change. Yr2= B, oil change and fluids. Yr3= A oil change. Yr 4= biggy, oil, fluids, sparks. Yr 5 = oil change and ATF if >37000 miles.

I just booked 3rd year service and quote was £304 with my own oil or £450 with MB oil. Price on MB website My Service was £497. I chose to supply my own oil. I buy it on Ebay from Mercedes Benz of Newcastle.

You need 9.5l of oil for SLK55, according to manual. And this is the oil on Ebay: Full Synthetic Oil - MB 229.5 (Petrol Engine) Recommended By Mercedes-Benz | eBay

2 x 5l + delivery is around £43 and you can either use 24h or 48h delivery for almost the same price. You will also get invoice for the purchase, so you can show it at MB in case they don't want to accept the oil. MB Retail Group doesn't want customers to bring their own oil but when you say it was bought from MB dealer and is MB branded, they accept it. I did the same for C63 service in past.

Regarding air con, read this https://www.mbclub.co.uk/forums/amg-lounge/224276-c63-air-conditioning-codenser.html maybe there's something wrong with your condenser. That's what happened to my SLK couple of months ago and it seems to be popular issue.

Hi Guys,
just picked the car up from service.
Cost was £405 in total supplying my own oil.
Still quoted me £643 when dropping it off this morning until I said its an A service that is due not a big B service. Came back and said "oh ye,h ok the system is wrong".
Yeh right. How many people would not question it.

Anyway , told me the condenser unit is stone damaged and is £900+ to replace.
They charged me for another cabin filter which was done last year? part number ma 835 00 47 @£77 ?
Told them radio keeps going silent on DAB which still went off on way home.
Anybody else feel as though they are robbing Barstewards?
Am I being harsh and should I question the condenser issue as the mechanic could not show me the stone damage and also should I question the filter replacement?
Your thoughts are appreciated.
Even if you do think Im a tight tw£t....!
Regards
Rob
