I thought that they were not using the 63 engine but instead tuning the 55.

Would be interested in a new SLK if it had the 63 engine though.

Not bad, but still not my cup of tea. :dk:

Side grill idea stolen from BMW M cars ;)

Really interested in this article. A very positive move for the new SLK 55. I shudder at the though of the list price when its released.

Good 'ol displacement on demand. It's been around for a while, but I guess it's only just got to a refinement/development level that Mercedes deem it viable for their cars. Nice, it's a great idea.

This may sound a daft question, but will it be the same 4 cylinders that it uses or will they alternate?

Wonder if there's an over run that blows air through the diffuser when you're not accelerating...

Didn't there used to be a cylinder shut off mode that was an option on the larger engined Mercs anyway? I'm sure I've seen it in an old brochure for the CL or S-Class?

Cadillac used to do this 'modulated displacement' with their L62 V8 6 4 engine & the Northstar engine could run for a long way without any coolant by switching banks to allow one to cool.

I don't know how the Northstar thing worked out but I know the V8 6 4 engine was not a loved thing.

Maybe MB's modern electronics can do a better job.

Hmmmmm. The old system MB had was reliable with the clyinder shut off. It was option on 220 S classes etc.

I though AMG was going for turbo engines, good to see we are getting the choice of a naturally aspirated car.

Not sure it is choice but rather the only option at the moment...

"In case you were wondering, the system can't be introduced on the M157 itself, (although the majority of its components are identical), because AMG hasn't yet worked out how to seamlessly integrate the turbos - although you can bet they're working on it."

Why would they not just give the SLK the new twin turbo engine as per the new CLS amg, or shove in the 63 engine from the C class?

Even more warble tastic
