Think this was touched on a while ago. Have C220CDI Sport(1999) and am concerned about the long(10-12 minute wait) before any kind of heat takes effect while warming up on morn startup. What's more I get more frozen condensation (from breath I think) after I get into car than I ever had with old MkVI Ford Escort or banger I ever had. Babe has Air con and all. Think someone suggested removing pollen filter to increase flow of air? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have a similar problem with my SL500, at times regardless of the temperature set it blows out cold air.

Change the pollen filter which is in a small compartment below your glive box in a rectangle shaped containor with two slide clips on it.

Also make sure you have your AUX heater on. ITs the switch next to the gearleaver with the red button glowing when its off. When its cold enough and you start your car , it sounds like a jet engine under your offside wing followed by what smells like parafin and a black clowd of smoke. This is supposed to warm the car quicker.

Thanks Fuzzer. Yeh... know about the jet engine switch but this seems to make no difference. Well actually this seems to come on anyway when cold, even with switch is OFF. Though sound has smell as well.. just like a jet engine.. great sniff .. anyway! Prev owner said he had problems with it coming on at all. He took it to Merc stealer to fix.. but I guess they bypassed the switch! Will attempt to change pol filter to improve things.. thanks for reply anyway.

Got my fan prob sorted, turned out to be a clogged dust filter.

Wish i had tried changing mine before going to MB then may be my pocket would not be £140 lighter.

Tan

Ziggy,

It might be the engine thermostat stuck open. This is found somewhere in the engine block. At start up it’s closed preventing flow from the radiator which allows the engine block to heat up rapidly, it will then gradually open and allow cooler water in from the radiator. If its stuck open it will take ages to heat all the water in the system.

Just a thought.

220CDi Engines are very efficient and run very cool!

Most owners of vehicles fitted with the 220CDi or 270CDi in Europe have them fitted with full on Eberspacher heaters that preheat the engine coolant using a timer. Heating is a real problem with these engines as they run very cool. Last time I enquired I think it was around £500ish for a fitted one. At least with these you have instant warm engine on starting.
