SLR damage repairable

Where on earth would you get spare body panels for an SLR - other than MB/McLaren - whose prices would probably make the car economically unrepairable?

I seem to remember someone mentioning just a door seal for one of these is ££££s+

And why on earth wasn't it written off/repaired by insurance - who drives 1/4 million £ cars without cover?

Very expensive to put right. The bonnet alone is something like 20 grand.

Yes that's right. They wanted 7 grand for a door seal on the roadster.

If it's "easily repairable" as he states why doesn't he do it himself and sell the finished article?

It's one of those- "if you have to ask the price you can't afford it" cars. Obviously a snip for someone with a oven big enough to cure an entire carbon fibre body shell in their back garden just waiting for a day like this.

The very same person who can afford to purchase a £1/4m car perhaps?

"Road Traffic Act 1988

Sec144 Exceptions from requirement of third-party insurance or security.

(1)Section 143 of this Act does not apply to a vehicle owned by a person who has deposited and keeps deposited with the Accountant General of the Senior Courts the sum of £500,000, at a time when the vehicle is being driven under the owner’s control.

(Section 143 is the requirement to have third party liability.)"

(In theory)

But I would stake a 1/4 of a million £ (if i had it!) that his probably wasn't the case for that car. There has to be a story behind it - what did they hit?

£20k for a bonnet... Hmm.

And how saleable in the future - I would think a repaired on the cheap damaged SLR might be hard to shift. You can be choosy when spending that sort of cash :)

Get a reputable body shop. Somebody who can do work like this.....

I'm sure someone will buy it and spend the proper money getting it back A1. After all they aren't made any more (is that correct?) and so will gain in value?
Just look at all those W198 examples, most are as original as Trigger's broom!

When I was looking at buying a roadster there was a car I tried which had been 'off' the road and repaired. It still didn't drive properly in my opinion and on doing some digging, had damage very similar to this vehicle.

So that's what Spinal was up to last summer.:D

Surely that BMW is beyond repair.

The insurance company should have had it crushed.

It's apparantly HPI clear - hence no insurance claim against it - hence the owner can do whatever they like.

As you say, a complete mess. Cars like this are usually only any good for their ID (!) and/or a few scrap parts. Run a mile!

I see the SLR screen is cracked. I was quoted 7k for a new windscreen for the SLR. Got the scratch polished out for a few quid instead. No way is that car worth repairing. Would be a good donor vehicle for an existing owner though.

"There aren't enough superlatives in the English dictionary to describe the beast that lurks within the carbon fibre super car that is the Mclaren SLR."

How about "overweight" and "bloated"?

At £88k?

I wonder if that engine and gearbox would fit in something else?

What part of that M5 does he think is repairable

Probably the swirl marks on the bonnet caused by whoever drew lines in the dust...

There is a video on YouTube of an SLK with an SLR engine in it ( in Arabland of course ) , saying goodbye to a Ferrari Enzo.

There is a great big hole cut in the bonnet to fit it in.
