Smart top

I don't think mine was a smart top but the other make. I fitted to my sl, took about an hour finding the correct module to link it to and which wires, but it was worth the effort.

Yes we have one on the SLK55, easy enough to fit with the seat out and a great bit of kit.

Hi again,

I was able to fit the SmartTop in around 90 mins, working slowly and carefully. It's reasonably straightforward and nothing that should worry you. It's a little bit of a tight fit to locate the module in its intended place, but it just takes a little patience. The most tricky thing for me was detaching the speakers until I figured out an easy way to do it. Here is a long thread from SLKWorld which has supplementary information that might be useful to you:

Installing the R172 version of the SmartTop Module - Mercedes Benz SLK Forum

My post is #269. Unfortunately all links to the photos have expired from this thread, but I still have the photos from my post somewhere. Let me know if you want me to dig them out.

The SmartTop is a great device, I'm very happy that I fitted it.

Regards,
Malcolm

Thanks Malcolm, much appreciated. I plan to order the module in the next couple of weeks so might give you a shout about the photo's when I make a start.

Hi Malcolm
My Module arrived yesterday so weather permitting the plan is to fit it this weekend. If the offer of photo's is still available, can I take you up on it.
Cheers
Tony

Hi Tony,

Actually I was mistaken, the photos are still in that thread I posted above. My ad blocker was for some reason preventing them from displaying. What I suggest is to read the whole thread, don't be put off by its length. You'll see that lots of people have successfully fitted the SmartTop. I would recommend to print the instructions from the SmartTop website and keep them with you while fitting. And print any of the pages from my thread that seem helpful. Armed with that information, some basic tools, a cup of tea and a little patience - you'll have it installed in no time. Good luck!

Regards,
Malcolm

Had one on my SL which got stripped off before I sold it and now installed on an SLK in Oldham! Easy enough just needs patience and particular attention to polarity

Have one on mine and have fitted half a dozen to other blokes cars.

Great addition. Pity about the stupid price on it though.

Hi Malcolm
Sorry, but can't find post #269 via a search. Might be me being thick!
Also, what speed have you set function 4 to operate at. I don't want to be too ambitious and find my boot lid flying through the air at 60 mph
Regards
Tony

Scratch that, just found it!!!! Perhaps I should learn to read properly!

Had one installed on my CLK and loved it last summer

It then failed a few times and I got tired of hard resetting it by diisconnecting the battery (not good for car)

Had it stripped out and refunded by the Germans

Pity as I liked it but lost faith in it - remote opening was cool though

Hi Tony,

I have function 4 set to the maximum of 60kph. If you need to close the roof in a hurry then this gives the maximum flexibility. But normally I would try to slow down as much as possible - as dictated by traffic conditions - before operating the roof.

Also, the R172 version of SmartTop is highly reliable - haven't read any reports of it failing.

Malcolm

Well, I was eager to make a start and the weather was set to be fair from 4.00PM, so off I went.

Job done in just under two hours. Took my time, drank some coffee and had some fun doing it as well. Done a test drive and well impressed.

Thanks malbry for all your assistance and thanks to all who took the time to reply.:thumb:

No problem, glad it all went well.
