Smell of gas before starting the car

I have a 63 reg C180. Its been driving perfectly okay for almost a year now, but for some reason I can smell gas from the outside (but not inside) of the car before I even start the car. The smell usually comes through the left hand side of the bonnet, but I couldn't see any oil leakage under the bonnet nor any oil stain on my driveway. What kind of problem is that? Should I get someone to look inspect it properly?

By gas smell do you mean petrol smell, in which case it's unlikely to be an oil leak?
In answer to your last question.. Yes. Find a good independent MB specialist. Whereabouts are you in the UK?

Oh yes sorry. Right, it was petrol so I guess it make sense to have no stain. I'm in Oxfordshire - any recommended specialist?

That's a bit of a ride! There is a MB main dealer in Swindon I reckon? Have you ever tried their service?

Yes, I used the main dealer for the first 4yrs. Swindon MB were first class, no complaints. They fought a couple of warranty claims for me, successfully. Even did some custom coding and mod research, often FOC...
