smell of petrol coming through ventilators

Ok. Heres an update. Ian very kindly sent me all the hoses of the estate he was breaking (a 300). Unfortunately they do not fit  ! Clearly MB changed the arrangement at some point. I have emailed my local dealer (tried calling but no joy from Parts department) requesting the correct partnumber, price and availabililty for our vehicle. Whilst waiting for their response I re-read this thread and notice the bit below

The hose is sold by the metre and is approx £14 per metre but you will only use part of that, perhaps half (I cannot remember).

I have part number A230 476 87 26 listed but not sure if latest number.

You will need to give your VIN to parts person at Merc dealer counter, they normally keep it in stock.

The new hose clips are part number N916033 011100 cost £1.29 each.
(2 required and are fitted with screwdriver).

So, if i buy some of this hose how easy is it to fit the old, existing connectors to the new length of hose? Do i just pull/carefully cut the old connectors out of the old hose and push-fit to the new? I have bought a clamp for the fuel line from the petrol tank (yes; still sat there with 60 litres in it so i dont want to waste it!)

Awaiting your advice,

matt

Ok.

Awaiting your advice,

My advice is get it done by someone who knows what he is doing.

Sorry but your life, and your passenger's, is too precious to be messing with fuel-lines and not quite know what you are doing.

Problem cured!

Here's the fault - no wonder it was dripping!

New part ordered from Gareth (Partsspecialist here on forum). Gareth very kindly sent new washers too so have one of these mate:bannana: . However there are 2 sizes of washer (3 required in total) to connect the hose to the fuel pump. I had a small 'weep' from the smaller washer. So I rang Mr Walker at 124 works and asked if he had a handy hint - and he did! heat the washer in the gas ring until it glows dull red and then quench in water. Refitted the washer and everything looks tight, no leaks and no smell of bloomin' petrol anymore (except on my clothes were fuel inevitably leaks from the fuel lines, filter, pump, etc). took for a test run and everything looked good so reconnected the covers (for the filter and the pumps) and will check again in a week or so.

One final tip. If you ever have to do this job be careful with the alignment of the valve that fits inside the end of the hose. the valve has 4 openings, anyone of which must marry up with the opening from the fuel hose so I suggest you scratch a mark on the nut between the hose union and the pump as this is fixed. when you come to re-assemble the hose off the car this ensures everything is inline. this is important because the thread only 'catches' in one place and you want the hose pointing upwards - not downwards...so ask me how I discovered that:eek: .
