Not mine, but I was tootling along the A299 in Kent this evening when a beautiful looking 20year old 280 SE whispered past me at about 80. Little bit of grey smoke drifting out of the exhaust, but it looked the business. Then he had to slow down for traffic and a bigger plume of blue smoke came out the back as he backed off the throttle.

Suddenly, I was in a fog bank! All the cars ahead disappeared in the smoke and I fully expected to see the elderly Mercedes having a rest on the side of the road.

Not a bit of it, the fog cleared... and there he was, about a half mile down the road, trickling out smoke again and passing everything.

Obviously getting the last few miles out her her and enjoying every minute! And who could blame him.....

It brought back some memories, I had 2 x white,280 SE V8 wedding cars in 1974 ..in a previous life!

It's just the valve guides and seals. A head job would fix this problem.

All 280SE models were straight sixes , not V8s .

Unless you were talking about the W108 280SE 3.5 , which was a different model .

Thats the ones, had the huge grill and twin vertical headlights, I remember the looks because the lights were similar to my Dads old Alvis TF21.
