So I need a new windscreen.... which is the best service?

How do you know who your insurer's approved supplier is?

I'm with Elephant, and Autoglass are their (or one of) approved windscreen service.

So far, it's top notch service.

My policy says that if I use approved repairer then I just pay £60 excess.
I assume their suppliers only give out the pattern parts.

If I use own supplier I get £125 towards costs. Knowing MB, their glass ain't gonna be cheap!

You might be surprised, I had the screen on my W204 replaced by an MB dealer yesterday, who were very competative £149 + Vat for the glass and £90 +Vat for fitting. All in all substantialy cheaper that the quote from Autoglass who the insurers wanted me to use.

I have the peace of mind that comes with maind dealer work, a fully valeted car and polite service (not suggesting that Autoglass etc may not be polite but bet they would not have valleted the car for free).

I read the policy, not sure which supplier my insurers recommend. Will contact them when I'm going to actually book the work (in a few weeks)

One thing to note is that you may not get the same colour sunstrip on the screen if you dont go OEM.

My Dad's W210 had a new screen from Autoglass last year and they replaced it with a screen which had a blue sunstrip - not the orignal grey colour.

My W202 has had the same thing happen to it in its past.

Depends how bothered you are with it?

What grieves me is the profits these comapnies make. The seal went on my son's Golf Gti and because it's the seal and not the windscreen then the insurance companies said 'Tough'

The major installers were all quoting approximately £400 to come out and replace the screen (you cannot replace the seal without breaking the glass)

I contacted a local one man band and he charged £150. Same windscreen and an excellent service but £250 cheaper.

i had the same thing with my rattly rover runaround, the big boys wanted £400+ i ended up using a local independent who charged just under the £100. it was a very good job to.:)

I had the windscreen replaced on the C Class by Autoglass in Croydon this week. The car was taken to their workshop - not done by the side of the road.
I got a sunstrip version fitted (which it of course had before ;)).
No problems with the light sensor, it works how it should.
I've used them in the past to replace the windscreen in the BMW, so I would recommend them to anyone on here.

Go to Autoglass and insist on original MB windscreen be fitted.

Best to take it in to them at their depot if you can rather than have them come out to you.

Autoglass turned up, with the wrong screen. It had no sun stripe shading.

Everything else was there.

Fitted pointed out that my car had already had a replacement windscreen as it wasn't the orginal.

When the agent calls back, I'll do the OEM demanding bit and go to them.

Used Autoglass on my old Volvo V70 after some scrote tried to break the rear quarter window with no success so then did break the back window.

Unfortunately a piece of painted plastic trim was also damaged. Direct Line argued long and hard that it was bodywork (hence £250 excess). Eventually won the argument after Autoglass fitter confirmed that he could not refit the window properly without replacing the trim.

Autoglass will provide an OEM MB screen for an additional £90.

Chap said, do you really want to pay £90 for a MB stamp on identical screens? Elephant won't cover the extra cost.

I agreed with him.

Wrong screen again, this time the correct colour with correct sun stripe..... but no rain sensor.

So, this time they are getting the correct screen from a Merc dealer, and I have to wait a week for it.

Presume this'll have the MB logo on it? Why all this fuss ?!?!

Whilst my car was in for warranty work (Rust issue), i had a call from a company, i believe called 'Hilton windscreens' who are approved by the MB body shop. He said my windscreen has a few chips and they would replace it and waive the £60 excess. That was 3 months ago and i have not had a problem.

When i had the 560 SEC i had both screens fitted by a company called Old School Windscreens in Chertsey through my insurance co, i phoned my insurance company and they said that co was on there books and to go ahead. They specialise in Mercedes and where brilliant.

Autoglass called. They claim that Mercedes can no longer supply the windscreen for my car. Blue with grey stripe and rain sensor.

Only blue with no sun stripe and rain sensor.

I find this hard to believe as the W210 Avantagarde was still in production in 2002, only 5 years ago.

I'll drop into Merc Stratford and ask them.

I got a screen for my W210 (2001) fitted by the Merecedes main dealer (ok, they may have subbed it out, but I don't know that) and I got a bill from the dealer. They price matched the excess from the insurers (£60 direct line I think) and it was all covered just the same as if I'd gone to autoglass.

That way I know I have full MB support for the screen. I did hear that some replacement screens are not as thick as OEM. As the bonded screen forms an integral part of the roof stiffening etc I'd prefer to go main dealer if possible, especially if the price is the same.

I'm going with AutoGlass. they quoted £60 for pattern or £221 for OE Glass.

Anyone got any views on this?

I'm leaning towards OE glass...
