As per the title - what go you into / made you want to follow your chosen career path?

Was there a trigger event? Did you just "fall" in to it or was there a magic "ta-da" moment?

I always wanted to be an inventor, so I became a Design Engineer the hard way (apprenticeship, tech & lots of study) now semi retired ,have patented many ideas, and really enjoyed my working life.:D:D

When I was really young I wanted to be a window cleaner, so I could look at naked ladies in their bedroom but I didn't like heights. :thumb:

Pure bad luck!!! I'm a qualified Engineering design draughtsman, got into sales as a "profession" in 1987 in technical sales (as I view and treat my activity as such)and more over the construction sector in 1999 when a Head hunter I knew well suggested it as a good career move! Ha!!!! what the heck did he know, but,,,, after 14 years still in the same area of work, riding ouyt a very tough recession apocalypse and surviving.

If I wasn't doing this, I would become a specialist collectable car restorer and sales man (queue the lumberjack song,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,)

I was just a kid who wanted a Spectrum 48k... was told repeatedly that I couldnt have one as they were too expensive and my parents had no money... Then a nice man called Arthur decided to kill the coal mining industry by calling loads of strikes and creating civil unrest...

This created lots of overtime for my dad! Which was a win-win... not only did he have lots of fun on his holidays to Orgreave to crack a few skulls - his overtime bought me a BBC Micro - which i then spent every waking minute learning how to use... hence a long and reasonably rewarding career in IT...

Thanks Mr Scargill :)

Trolling on a phenomenal scale.

My Dad's a retired carpenter and he use to take me to work to help him out when I was young...I left school in 86 and studied it for 3yrs....

Still doing it now and still love it...Feel very lucky that I enjoy my work as I have many friends in jobs just to pay the bills

Started working in a supermarket close to home when I was 16 doing gcse's and then a levels. They then asked me to train as a butcher which at that age paid well and now 24 years later I'm deputy manager and apart from being hard work and very stressful it pays well and still enjoy going to work every day.
Have worked all over the south east and have met so many people over the years, couldn't imagine working in an office with just one or two other people.

I wanted to design hydraulic systems, for some odd and now largely forgotten reason.

Instead I bluffed my way into IT. the IT bit was, and is, pretty boring, but the business behind it was fascinating. Been there since, and enjoyed just about all of it.

Have you anything useful to contibute?

Nothing that you would find useful, no.

I don't know anything about you as a person or as an online 'character' but I'm convinced that you are only present on this forum to create problems for it's members.

Your last post which relates to the miner's strikes of the 1980's comes over as a deliberately antagonistic statement and one which would would be particularly offensive to some of our members. I suspect that that was your absolute intention.

It's up to you from here, you either adjust your intentions or continue to follow the path you have commenced upon - what will you choose?

All of the above is a deliberate attempt by you to derail a thread that a number of other people are contributing to in good faith. Please do not reply to the thread if the topic does not interest you. Are you implying that my post is ficticious?

You derailed it all by yourself with your provocative and crass political comments.

Wow, lewyboy, take a chill pill. I don't know the guy from Adam, but his post didn't come over in any way offensive.

For me...I had just finished my BA in English Literature with Drama and Theatre Studies, and was all ready to become a famous actor, when my then girlfriend (now my wife) said to me "look, you spent the whole degree course in the library playing on the computers, why don't you do something with that instead?". So I signed up for a "Conversion Course" designed for electronics graduates, which ended up with an MSc in Computing Science and lead to a career in IT, as a Chartered IT Professional and Chartered Engineer. The Drama skills I learned are very useful in IT consulting work - interaction with people and communication skills are just as important as technical knowledge - so it's worked out well (and who knows, maybe I'll go back and be a thespian in my later years :))

I went to college to do "3 dimensional art and advertising design" .. , lasted a term and went to work in an art studio in golden square W1 .. Learning cut n paste right when desktop publishing was on the cusp.. Doh.
Left that and did a spell stacking these..

Got sacked from that for sleeping behind a stack of said items and fell into a job at Canon.
Fix these in the city now , easy life ..

Personally I didn't find redbaron's post offensive either... but it does demonstrate why the rule about not allowing politics on the forum makes a lot of sense.

My long career in IT started when a friend working for an Apple dealer - an almost unknown novelty then - offered me a job with the company he worked for. I had an interest in computers and even took some university courses - but these were room-sized IBM 360/370 with card readers and Teletype terminals - the pinnacle of the 'small' computers was a PDP10. There were brands then that have since disappeared - Philco, Mostek, to name a few. Apple's 'Micro' computers Apple, Apple II, and later the Apple IIc and Apple III were all very exciting machines at the time.

EDIT: I later became a Novell CNE - yet another forgotten brand - and spent large part of my working career designing computer network systems for a variety of clients - including a well-known international tier-1 OE automotive manufacturer who supplies MB...

I left school and was talked into going to college to do engineering; worked in Tesco's at weekends to earn some money. Had a disagreement with the Tesco's manager during the summer hols about what hours I was working. Left Tesco's and got a summer job in an engineering company - hated it. Got a job doing electronics - loved it - moved on to a computer company - loved it even more - retired at 55 - love it even more now.

Give it a rest Guys!

And Redbaron, you know we dont allow political discussion on here so why try your luck? please stop!
