Forget the "Electric cars are a thief’s dream" headline, this article is really about the increasing risks that the ever-more-encompassing use of software to control vehicle systems represents:
A couple of points that stood out to me were the illustration of the breadth and depth of vehicle manufacturer supply chains (10 years ago it was calculated that Ford used 1,400 companies across 4,400 locations in its Tier 1 suppliers alone), and the increasing rarity of skills in hard electrical engineering that are essential to creating vehicles that operate reliably. On the second point, a Product Manager from GM in Detroit told me last year that they were massively scaling back their new model introduction plans for exactly that reason.
