Thinking of buying one of those, but have found that the cigar lighter socket is not active unless the keys are operated. I have seen that there ones that connect via the EOBD port, has anyone got one that works that way? and does it actually work?

Re-wire the Cigar lighter to be permanently on... just need a couple of scotchlocks and a bit of thick wire...

Friend of mine had to do this to prevent his heavy-current alarm draining the battery....it was too flat to start the car after 2 weeks.. With the solar charger no problem for any length of time.

Obviously, he didn't know about the cigar lighter being switched-off with the ignition when he first plugged in the charger, but soon found out the hard way...

Just make sure the charger is giving out more power than the car is draining away, and this happens under worst-case conditions (say, a couple of continuously cloudy days)

There was a useful thread on the AA solar charger last year. Just put AA solar charger in search and you should find it.
