Hi All,

Got a Sony DSC-W150... bought in july from empire direct.

I use it for work but its getting more and more dust inside the lens. I cant see how to get it out!

Is this something that should be covered under warranty? Any other suggestions?

I don't think it will be covered by warranty, although you could try if it is excessive.
It should, however, be covered by a camera bag whenever not being used to minimise dust exposure.
It is only very expensive pro-spec cameras/lenses which have truly rigorous dustproofing such as Canon L lenses

Unless the camera is advertised as dust/water/etc. proof I doubt you would get anywhere with a complaint / claim. Does it visibly affect the image quality? Digital cameras should generally be treated with kid gloves and kept in a case etc. when not being used. If the environment doesn't encourage this then something like

would probably be a better bet.

I would not tell them what you do with it;if they ask just say "take pictures"! Tellthem you have had it 5 months and theres dust in it and see what they say?

Dust will not be covered under warranty.

I have a Canon EOS 350D that I have this problem with. Just take it to a good camera service center and get them to clean the camera. I pay around £40 a go for this.

A full clean (all camera apart) costs around £100 (I think), although never done it.

Are you sure it has got dust inside? I only ask because I think that particualr camera does not have a removeable lens.

Sometimes when I take digi pictures in low light I get a lot of what looks like dust spots on the image but are reflections from dust in the air ( I think - I could be wrong) but not from actual dust inside the body of the camera itself.

Can you actually see the dust inside the lens or is it the dust on the images which is the problem?

As others have said, you can get the camera cleaned by a specialist for a reasonable price.

My advice in future is to not leave the camera lying around in a bodyshop when they're doing the sanding. :D

There are some reports of compacts ingesting dust into the lens mechanism.

The suspicion is that the lense assemblies are not completely sealed and there is a pressure chage as the lens extends/retracts.

I'm assuming that NewMB is refering to sensor dust contamination on his/her EOS350D which is a different problem as that is a DSLR with interchangeable lenses.

A digital compact can pick up dust if it is pocketed - soft tissue paper gives of copious quantities of fine dust over time that collects in the pocket and transfers to crevices of the camera. Then when the camera is switched on and the lens extends the pressure inside the lens mechanism may undergo a brief pressure reduction and the movement of the external lens parts may allow small gaps to widen briefly. There is a suspicion that some cameras are prone top dust ingestion as a result.

I would suggest the OP talk to their retailer or Sony with regard to warranty because a pocketable camera should be reasonably resistant to dust ingres in order to be fit for purpose.

thanks all, im going to try empire direct as all my previous cameras have been used in the same conditions and have never suffered from it... really is annoying as can only take pics from certain angles!

Post a picture so we can see.
