I was thinking of getting some performance mods done when the eurocharged boys fly over the pond, and started to get some quotes via money supermarket and the likes.

I currently pay £890 pounds for my insurance and none of my circumstances have changed. So I just clicked for a standard quote with no mods, result was £1375:eek:.. It shocked me to see how much it went up from what I already pay.

I then decide to add the mods I want to the quote, which is s/c pulley and map. The result was £2750:eek::eek::eek:

So my question is are there any companies the any one can recommend for modified cars?

And does any one have any idea as to why the quote for the car as standard has shot up by so much?

Have a chat with some of the modified brokers that may also be able to guide on how to word certain mods, some insurers may also allow a power increase based one eg less than 10% or less than 20% increase as an example.
Sometimes the best place to start is your current insurer, not sure on general market for renewals. I was much happier this year I managed to get a very competitive rate that reduced my premiums by quite a bit.

Adrian flux are modified car insurers. Worth a call to them.

Some companies won't cover you at all with mods. Others will, but for a huge increase in premium (as you have found out). As mentioned you will need to shop around - it does complicate things (assuming you declare the mods of course ...).

I had thought about keeping it quit, but then thought if I had a crash it wouldn't be worth the potential hassle.

I have had a few heavily modified Ford RSs. There are insurers that accept mods and only charge an admin fee to add them to the policy, but thats on the Fords, not sure on Mercs..

The insurer i was with for my last RS were very cheap with all mods listed (standard car was 215bhp, mine was running 400bhp) and included track cover etc, rang them when i got the Merc and they were very expensive..

So there is places but you need to shop around. Most the main companies on the compare sites dont like mods..

Eg. A couple of years ago i got an Escort Cosworth, went on compare site and they said £900, mentioned some of the mods it had and most wouldnt quote, the ones that did were saying £2400. Rang the guy the does loads of the RS lads, listed all the mods and he said £295. This was limited mileage but thats fine as it was a weekend toy..

Agreed, if you're involved in a big claim they will send an engineer to look at the car and they're not idiots. Physical changes are easy to spot and I think it's pretty standard to check for remaps nowadays.

Dan.

Have you tried confused.com?

I have always found them much cheaper than the other usual comparison sites.

As well as the comparison ones i usually also look at following:

Sky Insurance Low Cost Motor Insurance | Vans | Motorbikes | Commercial
Greenlight Greenlight Insurance
A-Plan Car insurance, home insurance and more from A-Plan
Chris Knott Alfa Romeo Owners Club Insurance (AROC Insurance), Saab Owners Club Insurance (SOC Insurance), Volvo Owners Club Insurance (VOC Insurance) from Chris Knott Insurance
LV LV= Liverpool Victoria - UK Insurance, Investments, Retirement
Aviva Aviva - UK Life, Home & Car Insurance Provider. Quote Direct
Direct Line Direct Line - Car insurance and Home insurance

I am currently looking for renewal on policy that i added the E55 AMG to, before I bought it in November I checked and it was around £500, but 2 months later and it's £600 :(

Mine is un-modified though so experience of the above may be different but most will insure modded cars.
