Has anybody ever tried to soundproof under the bonnet, if so what material did you use and was it any good,As I am thinking of doing this to mine shortly because at the moment I haven't got anything.I just want to try and make things sound a little quieter for day to day running.cheers:D

you are better adding more insulation to the bulkhead, floorpan and wheelarches to quieten things don in day to day running. Under hood insulation is best left to the "experts" OK. you can do it at home with some good heat resistant acoustic matting (most coachwork specialists will sell it) but it must be fixed with specialist adhesives and/or strapping etc to avoid any contact with moving parts. It will also cause greater heat build up under the bonnet as any heat dispersion through the uninsulated metal will be reduced or lost - just think how much loft insulation saves you in heating bills at home :)

Adding acoustic panels to the inside of the doors also reduces noise drastically and there are loads of aftermarket firms offering full acoustic kits for most cars.

here's a couple of links

Hope that helps

Might be worth trying the dealer.

My old C180 had a very small piece of under bonnet felt type stuff that came about 18" up from the bulkhead, my C250TD has a complete underbonnet one that is much thicker too. Not sure if it would be a diesel or elegance option.

I am thinking of doing something with the rear wheel arches as that is the only place you can hear any noticable noise from, particularly when the road is wet.

Cheers guys.I never really noticed heat build up before but ill look into it. The glue bit has caught me out as i never realised it was glued on just thought it was clipped on somehow.Still it cant be a bad thing to do if done right, as ive had, and seen loads of cars with underbonnet sound proofing. You just dont realise the difference it must make because it's allways been there.

Just a thought, but as Jimmy's C250TD has a complete underbonnet one, I should think you could get one from a breakers yard. Shurely it's the same type of bonnet.

How's it fixed on Jimmy, clips?

Yeah both of my w202s have/had underbonnet insulation. I've only ever seen one without it.

I've just checked under the bonnet, and my car has insulation the full length of the bonnet. The part is held in place by what looks like four clips (circular looking plug things).

sounds promising

pluggers, you don't even have any carpet on the underside of your boot lid!

part number: Hood lining: A 202 680 00 25 clips: A008 988 78 (TIP: if you re-use 2 clips you will only need to order 2)

let me know price etc.

Cheers Koolvin
got the part on order now only cost £28.50+vat should have it by friday.Whilst at the scrappy today picked a carpet for the boot lid and also come across an engine undershield as well.

Has the engine sound proofing made a noticble diff or not really?

I think It has made it quieter, even putting on the engine and gear box undershield have made a noticeable differance, Im very pleased with the results and think it was worth the extra effort ,I think I will try sound proofing the inside of the doors next.Ill update when job is done.Thanx

Another mod I have done recently which I think quietens things down abit is the engine and gearbox undershield,As well as having other use's it also stops unwanted wind noise in the engine bay and around the transmission tunnel.

no mods were required for the engine undersheild

Slight mod on this one to clear the down pipes

The underbonnet soundproofing on my car is starting to crumble. I have ordered the new part (£25) but I was wondering how to fix it into place.

Greenoaks suggested evostick and claimed thats what they use. I am a little worried that if I choose the wrong glue it will either melt the insulation or not bond it adaquately.

Anyone offer any suggestions?
