An interesting use of AI to increase the posted speed limit on a 90 mile stretch of motorway from the current 75 mph up to 93 mph (150 kph) in 'optimal' conditions:

I am wary of such systems, not because of the use of AI, but because changing speed limits can be confusing for drivers and cause safety issues of their own.

Obviously, sometimes you have to put temporarily speed limits on motorways, but I would want to see these kept to a minimum.

It could be a first step towards autonomous vehicles, though - once the car is drivers by a computer, ever-changing speed limits won't be a problem.

But until then....

It is unlikely that the roads will ever be populated exclusively by autonomous vehicles .

Another example of people confusing "Artificial Intelligence" with "Automation."

There's no "Artificial intelligence" in creating an algorithm for managing traffic flow.

Someone's created a simple model, using a set of variables, supervising external sensors.

It's rocket science, not mimicking human intelligence by learning, and then adapting by making different decisions based on experience

It's not rocket science.

You could argue that at current, the existing algorithms only take into account a small number of the most influential parameters. This is because the marginal utility of additional data points is relatively low, and the resources required for exhaustive search of large amounts of data make the entire process uneconomical.

AI systems, on the other hand, can obtain very large amount of data points from a large number of sources then apply fuzzy logic and heuristic search patterns. This will result in better optimisation of traffic management.

But, like will anything else, if we now have a solution that's 80% perfect, achieving the last 20% will be far more expensive.

I don't believe for one minute that they're anywhere near "fuzzy logic and heuristic search patterns."

They'll have just put in more sensors and information feeds, and automated according to much more basic rules.

Must be them there Russkies !!! Yee Haaaa !!

It frustrates me, “AI” seems to be appended to anything and everything to make it seem more exciting. It’s mostly stuff that’s existed for a while with an appended name. It’s probably devaluing true AI too.
