Typically MB recommends replacing the spark plugs at 40,000 miles or 4 years, whichever comes first.

In reality modern spark plugs can last longer, however if not replaced there's a risk of the spark plug seizing in the cylinder head, hence the recommendation to change them at the prescribed intervals.

Correct on ever count.

As said, I do mine every 4 years (just done them actually). The M278 should use "special" Mercedes plugs that index properly, not sure about the M276 engine. I bought mine from Newcastle Mercedes and weren't much different in price too the non Mercedes ones. Note, they are twelve point so need the right spark plug socket.

Thanks for the reply's I did remove the plugs 4 years ago at 32k as I read that MB recommend doing so to prevent them seizing in the head.
The car's now done 47.500 k so there now due to be changed.
Off topic I know, but does this engine have an oil catch can as I can see some kind of a plastic container underneath the throttle body.

Sorry but I don't know about an oil catch can but I doubt it as very few mainstream cars have them as standard.

Just over half way through this video is the item I spoke about. Could it be an oil catch can.

Have you looked on one of the parts catalogues (the ones that give exploded diagrams) to find the part you mean and get it's name and part number to then Google it and find it what it is?

Thanks for the reply ToeKnee I tried that and it came up with Air intake hose/Crankcase breather the part No is A27609001
I removed it ( you don't have to remove the complete throttle body' just two screws ) Ther was a very small amount of oil in there which I cleaned out.
