Hello All.

What would be the sparkplugs of choice for my engine. Has anybody got an opinion. Also, how often should remove them for cleaning/re gapping, if that is neccessary. Any advice would be helpful and, I am just trying to know more about my w124. Thanks Mercedeslover.:thumb:

ps; Air filter which type MB or pattern. Thank you!

Get Bosch plugs and they come ready gapped.

Use a Hengst air filter as they are excellent quality

The Mercedes E-Class Owner's Bible gives the tightening torques as:

* Tapered seat 10--20 Nm
* With gasket 25--30 Nm

Not much scope for Mr Spanner Controller's muscles there then.

The Haynes manual gives 0.8mm as the gap for Champion plugs on all models, and advises that it may be different with plugs from other manufacturers. Bosch seems to be the same, with some variants that are not adjustable. MB's own Technical data passanger cars (October 1993) confirms 0.8mm.

Just quote your reg no to the motor factors and they will have the part no.

Give your VIN to parts person and they will give you the correct plugs.

There is a (listed by merc) choice of Bosch, Beru or Champion.

They are all non resistor types (very important) and cost about 2 pounds each - that's all.

Supplied with correct gap.

Change every 18,000 miles for your HFM engine.

I was given Beru last time (in Merc packaging) part number was 003 159 68 03

Make sure you get exactly the right plugs - for a M104 280: NGK BCP5ES, Bosch F8DCO (hard to get now), Champion C10 YCC, or Beru 14-F8DUO. The correct heat range is important. I've just replaced wrongly fitted NGK BCP6ES with BCP5ES and cured a recurrent misfire that's been going on for a year.

Misfire when hot, cold, motorway or town driving.
I'd be very surprised if one step in heat range could cause a misfire at all.
