Hi guys,

Is it true that the 190E 2.5-16 requires special fluids in terms of:

- Brake fluid
- SLS fluid
- Auto transmission fluid
- Power steering fluid

I read somewhere that you cannot use standard stuff...someone please enlighten me and kindly post the correct types of fluids to use! Many thanks...

Zak

My guess is that the standard MB recommended fluids for all 190's are fine. Depends on how the car is used- Road or Track. A good synthetic engine oil would obviously be a good idea. The only exception is the rear limited slip differential which uses oil specifically for LSD's rather than standard hypoid oil.

grober,

Are you sure about that or just guessing?

Those bits are expensive to repair/replace.

Listen to grober, he's right

Thats what the car will have started out with. HOWEVER because its a performance car there is a possibility that previous owners may have uprated any of the fluids particularly the brake fluid. Obviously not a good idea to mix different types of fluid together so unless the previous owner has passed on a detailed service history it would pay to proceed with caution. The limited slip diffs even changed from a plain mechanical multiclutch LSD on the early models to a full blown electronic ASD system on the 2.5-16v models. I also failed to mention that the 2.5-16v 5 speed manual box actually uses autotransmission fluid to sheet 236.2 as gearbox oil ( just like my old ford capri) but didnt think it was relevant to Zakh's 4 speed automatic query. To be 100% certain it would obviously be best to contact the local MB agent who should be able to supply the exact fluid specs for the car.
edit:- Neilrr , I have just noticed you have a 87 2.3-16v what do you use?

I haven't done a thing to the car yet so I'm not sure what's in it or what I'll put in it when it goes for service etc. Had it 2 months and hardly driven it as I'm tidying up the little cosmetic flaws it has picked up over 20 years.

The independent MB guy I have used for years races a 2.5-16 so I trust him to know what's best.

The reason I asked if you were sure is because at the back of my mind I remember a discussion about using different fluids (from standard W201s), but can't recall the specifics.

I'll put a post on 190Rev's 16 valve forum (where the die hard Cosworth boys live) & see what they say.

just get it completly fluid changed.. i.e the whole lot to merc specs and you will be fine..

drain everythig and start a fresh you got a reference point for all fluids then ..

thats what i do with all my new stuff .... down to draining the brake fluid etc..

I would not call them particularly special, they all carry specific MB oil codes but most of these are readil available in several brands

MERCEDES-BENZ 1988-92 P 190E 2.5-16 (M102) (201 Series)

Engine EO MBZ 229.1 10W-40 5 litres
Manual Transmission ATF MBZ 236.2/6 1. 6 litres
Automatic Transmission ATF MBZ 236.6/7 6 litres
Differential LS MBZ 235.3 1.1 litres
Coolant AF MBZ 325.0 8 litres
Power Steering ATF MBZ 236.3 - litres
You'll find all the oils to meet these specs from the German Lubricants Company Fuchs.
