The ideal MB specialist garage - a lucky find

I’m new to posting here, but not new to reading and benefitting from all the local expert’s advice. In return I’d like to start by offering this review of an MB specialist that has proved to be the best garage I've used so far. I wouldn't take my car anywhere else now, and I'm sure there are many other owners out there who would benefit from heading over there in their pride-and-joy.

My first MB (1996 S124 E220) joined the family last year (105,000 miles and a very decent example in general). But, as many of you know, buying an old car is the easy bit... bringing it up to scratch and keeping it there is where the fun starts, and for that I needed a reliable and knowleageable workshop to help me asap.

But where to find one? Bad garages charge the same as good ones, they all look the same and it's a minefield out there. As it turned out, I found a short recommendation on these forums from well-known member Nick Froome, the only specialist dealer of S124’s like mine and an authority on the model. He praised Automerc in North London, not far from where I live, so I booked my 'new' car in with them straight away for a full inspection.

Automerc turned out to be a long-established business with a busy workshop and a wealth of MB experience. They also have a body-shop, so from a full restoration downwards they’ll be able to help. It’s run by a partnership - Ivan is the business manager, the man you’ll talk to for bookings, parts requests, progress reports and good advice and Joe is the hard-working chief mechanic (a young man, but with a lifetime’s experience of classic and modern MB’s having grown up around the business). They don’t seem to advertise much but always seem busy - a very good sign as word-of-mouth and repeat custom means a lot.

My booked inspection was carried out immediately, with a full written report sent to me the same day in which all the issues I was aware of had been noted. It was obvious they knew my car inside out and knew exactly where to look for problems. Ivan was then happy to talk each job through, and help me prioritise the list of work - there was no hard-sell and the emphasis was on keeping a 20-year-old car on the roads safely and within budget, and not trying to as sell many repairs as possible. He even talked me out of some expensive jobs!

We agreed a schedule of work which they began that day, and as it progressed I was impressed to find photos in my in-box of the damaged parts removed and the replacements being fitted. My phone calls were dealt with politely and I was reassured by the competence and friendly attitude of both Ivan and Joe. The work was completed very quickly, and all repairs remain trouble-free after a few thousand miles.

Since then I have been back several times to address all my car's faults and each visit has produced the same result - very quick polite service and a completely honest approach to fault diagnosis, parts and labour costs. It’s well worth mentioning that if you turn up with an unknown problem, they will not throw parts at the car to fix it - it seems a matter of professional pride to them that a correct diagnosis always comes first and that’s where their long experience counts. I have also been really gratified by the attention to detail, and their willingness to help rectify small, niggly faults as well as the major repairs that are any garage’s bread and butter. Dash bulbs replaced, squeaky wiper silenced - things that even the main dealers often miss.

On the single occasion that one of their repairs failed (it was a faulty part, not bad workmanship), they took the car in straight away and sorted it properly - no charge, no quibbles. Of course, in theory all garages should operate this way but in reality it's pretty rare.

I took these pictures on my last visit. It can be like an MB museum in their workshop... that day they had a 200TE, W202 C Class, a very rare Brabus-tuned CLK, a newer E class saloon, a lovely R107 SL owned by a well-known actor and best of all a freshly-restored 280 CE. This lovely old coupe was fresh from a restoration by Automerc for a customer - Ivan showed me some photos of the extensive work in progress and they’re rightly proud of the result. If they can achieve this, I reckon my 124's in good hands.

I'll finish by saying that I’m nothing more than a satisfied customer who’s been treated well, and I have no connection with the business at all. Good work deserves praise, and I’m sure that any member here who pays them a visit will not regret it. I can’t fault Automerc.

Anyway, hope this helps someone out... it’s good to be posting here (finally.)

All the best

Tim

That little badge on the N/S rear window on a pristine 280 SE Coupe is a recommendation in it's self. That must have had some amazing refurbishment.

Peter - talking to Ivan I found out that the coupe's lovely wrap-around rear screen had to be taken right out in order to repair severe rust around the frame. Trouble is, replacements are apparently impossible to find now, and they're also extremely hard to remove and re-fit without cracking... scary stuff! Seeing it now, it looks as-new. The owner had yet to see the finished article when I was there, but I bet he was delighted with it.

By the way, I had a quick drive in a C43 about 8 years ago. What a drive it was - was there ever a better Q-car? Very stealthy, very potent. Reminds me of that saying: "talk softly, but carry a big stick". I see you've sold yours, but I imagine your current cars offer some slight compensation!

Yes i had the same problem with my 560 SEC rear parcel shelf a common problem due to the shape of the rear windscreen. The screens for the SEC being a much newer car are still made,so i had it replaced due to it's delamination.

The C43 was a great car,had it for five years and sold it to Olly who is a member on the Forum. He has his own garage Prestige Car Service in Waterlily. Olly looks after my CL and comes highly recommended.

Helloooooo

It's nice to see a positive recommendation of another Indy; there's not enough of it about.

pbreckenridge -

Oh no! The dreaded 'B' service - cue sharp intake of breath and a severe attack of empty-wallet syndrome...

I've researched the costs for B service myself recently and it's never cheap. I have a friend with an SLK (with a cheaper-to-service 4-cylinder motor) who paid over £650 for a major service late last year at a London main dealership (with a brake fluid change and plugs.) I have also read of £900 bills for this service if additional work is needed, with a main-dealer minimum cost of about £440 (in London, at least.

As far as I know, the B service includes 2-3hrs labour on the book price in any garage, and the inspection schedule is pretty comprehensive and definitely requires some specialist knowledge to carry out competently. I expect your quote includes VAT as well, which some on-line advertised prices don't.

My car had it's last B service in late 2010 just before I bought it, with a Mitsubishi (?) dealer in Durham... that cost £459 in total (but included brake fluid and coolant change, as well as plugs.) Parts / fluids came to £179, labor was £212, with a nice VAT bill of £68 to top it off. Bear in mind that my car's an ancient E220 that's pretty simple to work on, too.

I don't reckon you'd find a London specialist that would be much cheaper. There's a place in Surrey that offers a 'B' for an SLK for £240, but this price is before VAT, and there's some small text next to it that states that "these prices are a guide only", etc. etc. I reckon a solid up-front price is better than a "hope-for-the-best" price any day.

A regular back-street garage might save you £100 or so, but a nice car like yours deserves better - unless you know and trust the mechanic and don't mind a patchy service history.

I'd be very interested in hearing where you take your car, what work was needed and how much you paid when you do get the service done. I will need the same in the Autumn.

Cheers, all the best

Tim

I agree entirely... I would always rather pay an honest price, safe in the knowledge that the work done was of a high standard. Ivan was very quick to reply to my emails actually appologising for taking a day at the weekend to get back to me... I'll let you lnow how I get on.
Many thanks for your reply and advice.

Absolutely. There are loads of us independent specialists around that love our job and what we do.

Paul - no problem.

This forum is full of great cars, yours is yet another that I have a real soft-spot for. There's an R170 230 owned by a neighbour of mine that I never get tired of looking at. Even though it's been copied by so many since the car appeared, that roof is still an amazing piece of work. Bet you can't wait for the sun to come out again! By the way, there was a good buyer's guide for the original SLK's in the April edition of Mercedes Enthusiast. Tempting...

Just been sent this link - Automerc has a new Facebook page. There are some great cars pictured, like a mint W111 cabriolet that fetched around £100,000 at auction after it had been prepared in their workshop.

Cheers,

Hey Kamal... nice cars. A C63 in the Summertime... not a bad life, is it?

Hey Tim, love both my MBs, both very different cars. The C240 is such a comfortable car, even at 13 years old, and the 63 is a real bad boy. Nice on this weather :).

I have started using this garage. And the main reason is that things that need attention are properly identified and replaced. Initial experience was good overall. Just had B service done on the c230k. Further work will probably be undertaken there in the summer. Recommended.

Major work undertaken on the s124 e300d - engine mounts + transmission mount, belt damper, injector seals and fuel tank rubber mounts. Drives like a different car. First class work. A bit of trek there for me but worth it. Friendly, approachable and with understandable invoices. :thumb:

Thanks for your report - always good to know of other s124's that still have owners prepared to maintain them properly like you obviously are. I know of 4 or 5 other estates in my local area, but they all look as if they're being driven into the ground, and just one big bill away from the scrap man. Cars like ours will soon be a rare sight, I think.

It's also great to be able to really feel the difference after a car's been in the workshop - with the work yours has just had, it must feel super-smooth now (and no more rattling from that pesky damper!)

I will be taking mine to Ivan and Joe on Monday for an MOT and a maintenance service. The boys have rectified many issues since I bought the car a year ago and inspected it thoroughly along the way, so I'm as confident as I'll ever be with an older car on MOT day. With fresh filters and fluids and a once-over I'm sure it'll be ready for some long journeys over the Summer - never had a car that's so relaxing to cruise over long-distance with the family. After all these years, 124's still love eating miles, don't they? Providing they get a bit of mechanical love, of course.
