Those dreaded things have now hit the City .. they hang high up in the air, far away from the vandals :( You don't see them unless you're looking out for them!!! They are also at the beginning and the end of the 20mph zone.

Last night, I am sure I got done (no flash since they don't need it) when the flashing red sign said 38mph ... in a 20mph zone!!!

Watch out! The 20 mph signs are tiny and the new speed limit (and the new SPECS cameras) is not "advertised"

I seem to remember that the speed limiter does not work below 25mph!!

really? :)

I know that cruise doesn't work under 30mph, I will check this out in a minute, it's not like I can bust 20mph for the first 10 mins of my journey home anyway! ;)

Mine starts at 20mph.

All camera are supposed to be visible? and painted yellow? and there are supposed to be camera signs? I too noticed some new camera signs there but never seen the cameras yet. I even looked on the 'safety' camera web site but it only shows traffic lights and GATSO's so I started to wonder if there were SPECS cameras about. It seems strange as SPECS (I think) works over a distance and yet there are so many traffic lights in that stretch of road it must be difficult to get 'done' unless they're all green and no traffic about? Haven't seen the 20mph zone? Where's that? And where exactly are the SPECS cameras. I travel that stretch twice a day and would appreciate the feedback.
Further Note
A mini cab driver once told me that the SPECS in the limehouse link was turned OFF! and that only the GATSO's are working. I learn this in July as went through there at 45mph at 5am (going to catch a plane at Heathrow!). I still go through at 30mph though.
They ought to have special camera signs for SPECS so people know when they are entering exiting the controlled zones.

The SPECS are high up in the air. The first set is near the FIRE STATION, and the second set is near where Southward Bridge meets Upper Thames Street.

I didn't even know there were SPECS cameras in the Limehouse Link. I slow to 30 for the GATSO road markings, then if clear, I go to about 40mph.

There is also a 20 mph limit over Tower Bridge itself which is watched over 24/7 by these evil devices.

Also a weight limit enforced by sensor plates.

So if I'm travelling EAST, the entire road between Blackfriars Tunnel and the "hill" where the road curves to the northeast are covered by GATSOs and SPECS...
Thanks for this information.
About the Limehouse Link Tunnel - I'm not sure if it was SPECS or something else, but it was definitely supposed to measure your average speed through the tunnel - at least that's what was put about and what I read in local papers.

My way to work everyday is through the Limehouse link and always set the speed limiter on. Its so easy to be going over 35 in that tunnel without knowing. The car just picks up speed.
I every day see people bombing it through there.

Cheers
Ian

There are no specs cameras in the limehouse link. There are 3 separate digital camera sites in each direction. No speed averaging at all, just traffic observation cameras. It has been well documented in the local papers. It was originally perceived to be specs, but the press were incorrect.

I drive through them at 35 on the speedo, and go faster in between if the traffic permits.

Cameras across Tower Bridge have been there for ages, but don't seem to be active as I have managed to get across there rather rapidly on multiple occasions without any tickets, although I am cautious now that I have read about the 7 or 8 sites in London where specs is to become active immediately.

Wouldn't mind a multimap reference to the cameras mentioned above if anyone would be so kind, as I am not familiar with that stretch without seeing it on a map.

I assumed it was a regulatory requirement for Police forces to display signs were there are speed cameras operating.

So also assumed those small cameras were perhaps traffic 'congestion' cameras.

Speed cameras only needed to be in the open and "not black/grey" if the local agency wanted to keep the money. You were always able to have grey black cameras its just that they could not be called saftey cameras and the Treasury gets the dosh for them...

But the govenrment reversed the rulling this year under presure from safty campainers...

However I was told that you are not able to get points on a stretch of road where they are doing road works and reduce the speed. Only the fine...

Plodd ?? can you shed light on this ??

>Ken was left with a situation where the scheme does not even come close to breaking even, because lots of people found out that they did not need to drive in and pay the charge

Tunnel cameras definitely do not look like this.

yes, that is exactly what they look like on Upper Thames Street ... I last saw them in Nottingham I think.

nasty, evil devices

If they look like this they're probably SPECS, if not they aren't.

They could be checking number plates an tax disks, ANPR.

The cameras in the LL tunnel don t look like them in the picture. I know there has been loads of deaths in the LL tunnel and thats why I took it seriously.
I remember on the M6 in the roadworks a few years back seeing SPECS. On my camera detector it flashes up SPECS heading South on the M1 just before the M25. Are there SPECS on the M1? God I can t believe I have managed to keep a clean licence for so long (touch wood).

Ian

Saw a brilliant Gatso yesterday near Cambridge, as you near it you notice that it's wearing an orange jacket with " not in use " printed on it so you don't bother slowing down. It then flashes as the jacket is cut out at the front, apparently this is happening more and more often but if you complain you get let off, but how many people bother to complain eh

I believe the SPECS camera's on the M1 are for testing and are not active. If someone could post a multimap reference for the new camera's that would be great as I'm driving through there on sunday evening.
