Saw a police officer sitting inside a 1995 mercedes with a gun no signs, only a your speed in ???? on its roof.
A local guy set up a sign a few hundred yards down the road warning of the trap, thought it was funny.

Was it a Police officer? Or a local speed awareness team, sanctioned by the Police?

Quite a few around here, trying to get drivers to slow down through their villages

I am not sure, they had no uniform not even one of those white vans, just a mercedes and a speed counter on the roof.
I saw no signs also, I said to my friend that guy will get tones today, then we saw the sign later on by a guy in the street, saying,

sneeky speed trap ahead, slow down

Could be one of the civi operations?

Ie - local residents operating on an 'advisory' basis, rather than with powers to issue points and penalties?

Will

Just think about it - you are tired of speeders through your village...so what do you do?

I know set up a home made speed trap and 100 metres ahead warn everyone that a speed trap is ahead. Voila - cars slow down..

I know - cynical. :D

That`s what i though or maybe a retired man trying to do something good for a change

I know of a guy who at 2am bought speed bumps from somewhere and bolted them to the road where he lives.
It was all done to the regulations of highway and he got a £2000 fine and the council came and removed them.
4 days later a boy was killed by speeding, i just could not understand the reason behind the removal of those bumps

What do you mean by a retired man trying to do something good "FOR A CHANGE"?

How many retired men do bad things in comparison to younger men? As a retired man I find such thoughtless statements contemptible.

One or two of these around the Surrey/Kent/Sussex borders, a friend got clocked by one & received a letter from the police telling him to watch his speed & stating that they would hold his name on file for a year. I believe that on a subsequent offence he is likely to receive a visit from the police. Not sure that a prosecution could be legally obtained from this though.
