Hi Guys

I drive a 2001 (Y reg) E Class 200 Kompressor with 68k on the clock.

Tonight driving home, I reached to the CC stalk to set the top speed on the speedtronic as I always tend to do on my commute home, and up popped an error .. "Speedtronic VISIT WORKSHOP".

I pulled over, turned the car off, back on again (I work in IT).. but this didn't resolve the fault.

I carried on the drive home, and it felt like the car was down on power. Putting my foot down, the car would accelerate, but VERY slowly... not the punchy feel you would normally get.

Once home, I put the car in neutral, and gently accelerated .. the RPMs rose steadily, but seemed to cap at 4000. Tried it by flooring it, and again, capping at 4000.

Any ideas what this could be? Electronics or Mechanical error?

I have done a quick search and google.. and have seen things from:

" you need to replace the entire ECU" all the way to "you need to replace the break light switch"...

Any clues before I take it to a garage.

It could be a few things. By far the best course of action is to get it put on a STAR. That will tell you what's wrong. A good independent MB specialist is your best bet.

The capping at idle is normal.

As above. A Star is what i sneeded.

Soft tyre ?

If one tyre is under inflated it will be turning more quickly that the others and will upset the ABS/ESP and possibly cause the Speedtronic to register a fault.

interesting! although doubtful, as its MOT was just 7 days ago. Worth a check tho to see!

Why do people think the MOT is some kind of 'magic test' that means everything is ok for 12 months?

Tyres could have been fine 7 days ago, but not now.

The tester isn't going to comment if the tyre is a few psi down anyway
