Sport vs Comfort mode

Hi all,

absolutely love my face lifted C200 9G auto (1.5l engine) but sometimes the throttle can have an awful lot of delay when in comfort mode.
Putting it in sport mode does seem to eliminate this, but unfortunately I’m a bit of a penny pincher when it comes to fuel. Does anyone have any experience of whether sport mode has a noticeable effect on your wallet (or purse)?

Many thanks

Beege

A bit more fuel in sport as it hangs onto gears longer and rarely goes into the higher gears on ‘A’ roads, but not enough to worry about.
I use comfort in town/on dual carriageways, but always put it into sport away from them.
Only real issue is that if you have to pull away, 1st gear can be a little harsh.

Thanks Ted, sometimes I find comfort mode can be a little too unresponsive for round town, e.g slowing down coming up to a roundabout, then see a gap in the traffic so accelerate: the car thinks about it for a second, then speeds up, then has another think, then drops a gear. Just seems a little fidgety and noisy to me.

Unfortunately the characteristecs you describe are exacerbated by having a relatiely small capacity engine with relatively little torque at low rpm so the gearbox has to downchange to allow reasonable acceleration and may be more prone to cnanging down two gears where possible.

I did wonder if that had anything to do with it, I had a pre facelift C200 as a demonstrator for a few days before I ordered this one and I don’t remember the gearbox being as fidgety.
I ended up getting the 1.5l as by the time I came to order it MB had stopped taking orders for the older model and being particularly fussy about colour/optional extras (plus wanting an estate), factory order was the only option. I know they also offer a 2litre petrol in the facelift but I didn’t really want to pay out for that as I’m generally not an ‘enthusiastic’ driver.

On both of mine, Sport setting means it never wants to change up to a higher gear in slower traffic/built up areas, even on m/ways it stays in 6th or 7th when C would mean 9th. None of that can help mpg figures.

If you want a more instant response then you want an engine with a load of torque and supercharged rather than turbocharged.

Obviously as large an engine as possible IMO but then fuel economy goes out the window.

Comfort mode on mine should read "stay alive" Sport mode "you will die but have fun doing so".

In this weather Sport is scaring the S☆☆t out of me!

An enema before you go out maybe Kevin? :D

I had a C300 AMG as a courtesy car, in Sport it was great fun but dreadful on fuel.

Obviously it depends on driving style, but I’ve found Eco mode to be slightly more frugal especially with gliding mode.

More wide open throttle and more revs = more fuel used

Simples!

You're not wrong. I recommend the politically incorrect M113K mill. 5.4 litre V8 with kompressor. 476bhp and 700nm ex-factory. A quick dyno / remap took mine to 520bhp and 770nm. Fuel consumption has averaged 19.8mpg in my ownership. That's 10mpg less than an average car but a very fair price to pay for the entertainment.
In Comfort mode the gearshift is seamless but casual. Gets better in Sport and better still in Manual.

If it’s too unresponsive around town but fine on trunk rods and motorways then use S around town and C when cruising.

Around town the impact upon fuel consumption will be small, it will really be felt on faster roads, and hence using C there.

What' s wrong with switching between modes?

You can't be hooning all the time on British roads.

It's just a flick of a button to adjust it when you think you might need it.

Stuck in the usual traffic, or motorway roll: then it's C.

Flying through town, or on an A road: S

You need quattro..... sorry 4matic (forgot which forum I am on) ;)

Thanks everyone for your replies. Guess I’ll just have to try it in sport mode and see if it makes any difference to mpg :)
Thinking about it now I’m just being impatient and wanting someone to give me the answer rather than finding out for myself...so apologies to all you kind folks for that!

Facelifted 2018 Mercedes C-class saloon review
The biggest news is the arrival of an all-new engine in the 2018 C200 model . It’s a 1.5-litre four-cylinder with twin-scroll turbo and a mild-hybrid system known as EQ Boost. Based on a 48-volt electrical architecture, EQ Boost is a powerful integrated starter/generator (ISG) designed to boost low-down torque and power.
The EQ Boost system first appeared in the CLS Coupe, and works very effectively on that car. It provides an additional 10kw of power under hard acceleration, filling in the hole in the torque curve before the turbos spool up. It also enables coasting mode (or ‘sailing’ as Mercedes-Benz amusingly calls it), an extension of Merc’s ‘sailing’ mode, where the engine shuts down temporarily to save fuel.

This means there are quite a few reasons why the car may sometimes be sluggish in ECO mode- one that occurs might be that the state of hybrid battery charge may mean the EQ boost is not always available ?

I very rarely use Eco mode as it makes the car far too lazy especially in some circumstances when pulling onto roundabouts etc before the car has fully stopped.

I do use it on a run especially in Europe where more often than not the roads are much quieter so I can just put it into cruise and enjoy the drive.

I suppose if using Eco most of the time you can get used to the car.

I have noticed very little difference in mpg regardless of mode but there must be some pay off I guess.

My car is an E350 S212.
