Sportscoupe noisy sunroof

Hi!

Almost all this year, I am facing a very irritating problem regarding my panoramic sunroof. Whenever it is cold outside, the sunroof is creating a noice in every single slight "up and down" of the road. to be more specific, the noice is coming directly from the center of the sunroof where the two different class parts are meeting.
If I slightly open the sunroof - voila!- the noice dissapears.
I went to the local dealer twice. The first time, they opened the interior of the sunroof and checked all the screws - they found some of them to be loose - at least this is what they said! for 2 months the noice disappeared.
The second time, they did the same but to no avail.
Now, they say that it is maybe the elastic parts that need to be lubricated (they lubricated but didnt work) or changed.
I am afraid that something else is happening.
Now, the sunroof is working perfectly, apart from the consistent noice still coming from it.
Any ideas, would be very welcome.

From memory, (when I had one), the two glass halves have a plastic trim finish around the edges so the contact is not directly glass to glass but could be plastic to plastic?. Plus, there are other potential "noise" areas on the sunroof

I would get a friend to sit in the back when you are driving and see if they can pinpoint exactly where the noise is coming from because acoustics inside a car make it very hard for the driver to be able to locate specific noise.

There are a couple of products from MB that I have at home which are designed specifically for this type of thing but I am at work now so I cannot give you the part numbers so, if I may, I will update this thread tonight and also tell you about other areas to look within the sunroof mechanicals.

OK, if you cannot detect exactly where the noise is coming from but you think that it is around the centre area then I would suspect the plastic trim on the edges of the main glass. Get some of these from your dealer:

A 000 989 3660 Special silicone. Quite a small bottle
A 005 989 1971 Isopropanol. 1 Litre bottle

Raise or position the roof so that you can get to all the plastic trim then clean as much as you can with a cloth and the the isopropanol, its paint and plastic friendly so dont worry to much. Then, smear small amounts of the silicone onto the plastic trim so that you get a thin even coat all round it but especially along the edge that butts with the fixed glass thats over the rear passenger area. This stuff is quite thick, unlike some silicones, but a little goes a long way. Try to so the same with the fixed glass trim also where it is adjacent to the main one if you see what I mean.

The other areas to look also are the wind deflector at the front. You will see that it is spring loaded and as the roof tracks back it is allowed to raise by a couple of brackets or buffers on either side?. Clean and silicone lightly this area also.

Other parts are the main tracks and runners that the roof has along each side. From memory, these sit in channels in the roof which have a bristle dust seal. The dust seal isnt quite perfect and stuff can accumulate inside, the best way to clear this is with a very small paint brush with the roof open working from the back, try to use a vacuum as well otherwise the stuff ends up inside your car. Again, try some silicone on the runners. Another product is ''Finish Line'' from Halfords, its like a PTFE spray and very good, I used to use this in the runner channels.

Finally, the actual main roof seal will benefit from a light coating of the silicone where it contacts the glass, again, give it a wipe with the isopropanol.

Thats the areas that gave me problems on mine but I never figured out which exact part it was being as I lubricated just about everything that I could see and get to.

Good luck.

PS. You will have loads of the above products left over, dont worry, the isopropanol is perfect for cleaning glass inside and out but dont spill any on your leather.

Thank you very very very very much !!!
I will give it a try and - of course- I will let you know!!!

I had the same problem and MB changed the whole sunroof on my car so if you continue to have problems and are still in the warranty period then I would push for that.
