spring loaded chrome ovals

Could someone please let me know what the split spring loaded chrome ovals on the flat deck of my E Class Cabriolet are there for?
Its surprising how many people ask me!!

Something to do with the roof when it isn't down?

Two spigots onthe hood engage in them and then slide as the deck goes down and pulls the hood taut.
If that makes sense.
