Sprinter Heater Blower Fault

Hello, First post!!!

I have a 2002 Sprinter 211CDI van.

The heater blower started getting intermittent and eventually packed up altogether. I have had a number of Sprinters before and often the blower motor brushes needed changing so without checking first I bought a new set. When I took the motor out however I found that the brushes were hardly worn and when connected directly to a battery the motor ran fine. I checked all connectors and fuse, all clean and good.

I bought a new resistor from MB and fitted it. No difference. If you put a meter across the connector at the motor there is 12v when the roller switch is on, but the motor will not work when plugged in, if you join one side of the switch cable plug to one of the motor spade contacts and run another via a meter to the other spade contacts you still get 12v but the motor does not turn.

On the back of the blower roller switch there is a connector with 5 wires, one live red/blue and four others which go to the resistor windings to give the four blower speeds. If you remove the plug and connect the live red/blue to any of the other 4 cables the motor works at the speed relating to that cable but when connected to the switch ----nothing.

I thought the fault must be the roller switch so thought that temporarily I could leave the plug detached with the positive feed bridged with a wire onto a medium speed circuit until I could get a new switch. Then, after refitting all the dash I find that despite the feed being red/blue which I thought was the colour of live feeds going through the ignition switch, the motor continued running even after the ignition was turned off, so I had to strip it down again and disconnect it.

I would appreciate any suggestions and especially would like to hear from anyone who has suffered similar problems. I am worried that if I shell out for another heater switch unit, which is very expensive especially as the van is LHD, it may still not work,

Regards to all,

Michael
