I had a service done about 1 month ago and the brake pads were changed. These would squeak on light braking. The mechanic filed them back twice to no avail. Then they were changed and the new ones (different make) still squeak :mad::confused::confused::confused:

Any suggestions ?

What make are the pads ? Also did you use the MB grease sachets ?

Could be that dry old pads were relaced with dry new pads.

Never known a squeaky brake that couldn't be cured by some copper grease.

Unless its metal on metal, but then it's not a squeak, more a grind.

From memory disks were replaced approx 12 months ago, so dont think its the disks. I think it may be the fact that these are non MB parts. Any thoughts ? Thinking of changing them for genuine MB ones at next service.

Three options:
- Your disks are worn
- When replaced, no copper grease was used between the caliper and pads
- The pads are horrible quality (like the quikfit ones) that are designed to wear your disks out before the pads...

were the brakes bled when the pads were changed? always good to do this.

Disks and pads were replaced 20k miles ago. When I had a service done by independant eh changed the pads as part of the service. They have squeaked ever since. Losing faith rapidly with independants (this was my first service with an independant who came recommended on this forum) and looking at going back to Merc Dealer and getting them to sort this out.

there is a lip on the discs so new discs

Of course if they still squeak then you'll apologise to the independents?

THe pads are slightly loose, so they vibrate, giving off the squeaking noise.....we had the same on the XC90..... fitted some rubber pads behind the B. pads and it cured it.

At independents you can get what you ask for.

Joe Bloggs walks in and asks for new pads and discs as cheaply as possible please. He gets it. I'm not saying that's you, but unless you specify exactly what you want the mechanic may just fit off the shelf items.

If you want OEM pads and discs I'm sure the independent will happily and honestly fit them too and bee a lot cheaper than the dealer.

Have you been back to the garage to ask them to fix the squeak?

For what it's worth I've fitted Mintex pads and discs in the past and been very happy with the price and quality.

Squeaky brakes

I had a problem with squeaky brakes, which 2 trips to my Indie (who is good!) failed to sort out. Usual tricks of chemfering, greasing etc improved but didn't cure things. New pads and one set of new discs and existing discs were skimmed. Improvment but problem was still there. Other set of pads replaced and the new discs were skimmed - problem solved!

The skimming was done using pro-cut - a nifty bit of kit that skims the discs in situ on the car. This was done by my local MoT people who also look after all the local authority vehicles.
