No horn and no controls on the steering wheel work (unless I turn the wheel about 90degress from straight)

Is this caused by the contact squib ??

I had the same problem although not on a Mercedes.

It was caused by the wiring from the airbag "ring" that sits behind the steering wheel becoming damaged with age.

The ring wasn't that hard to replace although it can be tricky to remove the steering wheel and you may have to have the airbag light in the dashboard re-set afterwards.

It was with the W211 I had....

I think it was called a 'slip ring'. STAR failed to communicate with the Steering Control Module...
