Need some advice please. I know this has been covered before because I have seen the thread before but my searches have failed me.

I have just had a couple of bulbs replaced in my w202 intrument cluster and when I power back up now the SRS light stays on for about 3 minutes before going out. Before the bulb replacement it used to flash on for a few seconds and go out immediately along with the other lights in the cluster.

I'm sure the post I read before about this suggested that an MB engineer needs to reset this for about £100 but then remember that somebody could do this for around £20.

Does anybody know about this or have I got this completely wrong? No other parts on the car were messed about with including the seats (which I understand holds an airbag related wire for a sensor?).

Cheers,
Steve

When I first replaced a blown bulb my SRS light stayed on all the time and so I had a trip to my local indy garage who reset the thing for about £25 I learned my lesson after that and now disconnect the battery before starting any work.

Hi Pluggers - Do you know how they reset it? I am reluctant to push my instrument cluster back in yet until I know what they need to do in case it is reset from there. My cluster was a real pig to get out - Took me about an hour pushing from behind! If an indy can do it do you know what tool they need to be equipped with?

Thanks,
Steve

Just out of interest , did you try doing a full lock either way of your wheel ?

Fuzzer I've just tried this but doesn't make any difference. It seems to stay on for about 2 minutes regardless of whether the car is started or not (with ignition on). It does go out in the end but is just an annoyance :(
Anybody know anyone in South London or Kent who could reset this for me hopefully for around £20-25?

Cheers,
Steve

When he reset it he plugged his little computer into the diagnostic port in the engine bay, pressed a couple of buttons on hey presto job done and wallet feeling like it had been done as well,But it worked.

No! I didn't know about these little tricks back then :o

Thanks Pluggers - I'll try and find an Indy to do it on the cheap!

Steve, when you did the steering wheel thing Did you turn the wheel slowly to the left and then slowly to the right? I was told to do this to reset mine... did it right then left at first and it didnt reset then did it left then right and it reset it.

If that does not work then contact R2D2 on this forum and ask him to put you in contact with "Steve", he is based in kent and is very good.

Regards

Tan

Thanks Tan - I'll have another go. As it happens I am already due to make an appointment with 'Steve the Mechanic' so hopefully I can get that done as well as my service :)

Cheers,
Steve

I'm pretty sure that the steering wheel on full lock trick only resets the ESP fault light, it has no effect on ASR as ASR does not monitor steering angle.

The SRS light fault is for monitoring the airbag and supplemental restraint systems in the cabin and I'm pretty sure this has to be reset by plugging in a computer to the management system ECU to clear the fault. That is why people advise that the battery must be disconnected before attempting to remove the steering wheel airbag, for example during a steering wheel mod/upgrade. At least that's what I thought :)

Anything is worth a try :)

Steve Perry is correct - The steering wheel trick won't clear a SRS fault light. I cannot believe that I have personally made the 'same' mistake three (yes three) times where I have been left with an illuminated SRS light that supposedly only the stealer can reset.

The SRS monitoring system does not like any SRS component being disconnected when the ignition is switched on. The result is a lit fault light. It's sooooo easy to make this mistake if you leave your ignition on whilst doing bit-and-bob jobs on your car.

The bad news is that my stealer charges the 'minimum labour charge' to do this two minute reset job - it cost me about £40 each time. If you have a service looming, then I suppose you could wait until then, and have it reset as part of the service - it would probably work out cheaper.

BTW - I have seen a 'tool' on e-bay that is supposed to be able to reset SRS lights, costing £25 'buy it now', but I don't know of anyone who has bought one of these things.

Is it a Draper tool ?

If so, it probably works. Their Service Interval (ASSYST) reset tool certainly does.

How did you get it sorted in the end?
Changed some bulbs and guess what didnt switch the ignition off and now. A light that wont go out

If its still happening, try cleaning the seatbelt connector, may sound stupid, but it has a sensor which works with the airbag.

I stopped getting the SRS light staying on as soon as I did this.

Hi mate - I haven't yet. Still have the problem - Does go out after a couple of minutes though so not too bothered but would like to get it sorted.

KillerHERTZ - Which part of the seatbelt shall I try cleaning, the male or female part? :D

I remember reading it somewere, that when the seatbelt isnt on, the car sometimes has the warning light switched on, so you dont have your head blown off by the airbag.

I cleaned around the 'female' part, around the red button and in the shaft (ooh mrs!) and ever since, its been fine :)
