My car has one of those gearshift stalk on the the steering column , on two occasions this morning, I nearly used it, once for indicator, and second time for a quick wipe on the windscreen, no idea why? as my last S204 the wiper/indicator was on left!! So I should know better!!

Anyway, my main question is what if I do it again in the future whilst driving along, would the car come to a sudden halt! Or would the gearbox blow up if I selected reverse by mistake. , or press the park button.

You got the same fear as me.....my new car I know will have one, after years of the auto box being down by the left.

This appears to be a means to keep costs down, especially for the US market which have used steering column stalks for years.....but I can see me managing to attempt to wash the windows and put it in reverse.

I think I will have some practice on the dealers car park before settings on the road....LOL.

I don't see why you are having these problems, but irrespective, it's an electronically controlled gearbox so you can't perform an incorrect selection.

Thanks dieselman, I guess Mercedes would have a idiot proof feature built into this gearbox, in case for driver like me could have push in the park button while the car travelling at 70mph on the motorway!!

I tried various stupid things when I demo'd my 212 - it won't allow you to do anything silly like engage park or reverse at speed. No need to worry.
