Hello All,

I am a Mechanical Engineer & have an experience of two years working in automobile service station as a service advisor. I had 18 mechainics working under me when I was working in this field.

Now I have completly changed my line by moving into manufacturing sector.

Because I am orginally from Automobile line. I really feel hard to take my car to garage to get work done as I can easily do everything at home.

I was wondering is it not possible to create my own Stamp with my name , phone number and stamp my own service book.

Is it something which will be acceptable......

Please advice...

I don't think it would be acceptable if you were trying to make the stamp look like it had come from an authorised & VAT registered garage.

But it is your car & your service book, if it is clearly a stamp with your name & phone number & not Joe Bloggs Auto Engineers, then who can stop you.

Usually, a stamp from the dealer would mean your car was worth more, but in these times, they are all worth less anyway.

Plus, they usually do a lot less than what they bill you for.

I used to service a lot of my own cars, rather than stamp the book, I just wrote the date of the service down, when it is a few years old no one really questions it. The condition of the car says more about how it has been looked after.

U know we have same thoughts...same way of thinking...I liked it...why I posted here was just to have a feel of what others think......

As Russ says, once the car becomes older people aren't so bothered anyway, as long as there is reasonable evidence of servicing on or above schedule.

How old is your car as that will make a difference.?

You also lose the Mobili-life package and possibly goodwill support from Mercedes should you need it for mechanical or paint problems.

Technically if it has MB service history of at least one every two years then it is covered under Mobilo-Life.

You might be better biting the bullet with minimum dealer servicing (having thrashed out a reasonable rate) then do everything else yourself.

Well my car is now almost 8 years old will I still be covered if i stick to authorsied dealers stamp....If anything goes wrong what will I be covered for

Hi

I take a pic of the mileage, then distance remainaing to service and then reset distance (10,000 miles) I print these out so that the 3 pics are on one A4 page, i staple to this page the receipt(s) for parts used and then do out a page with all details of work carried out and staple it with the others. I do this out at every service and list any interim repairs that were carried out in between services. It is all stored on computer and in a Lever arch file for the car.

I always use MB parts and when i had the rust warranty claim they seemed happy that MB Parts were used when i had serviced it myself.

With a full MBSH it will be covered for rust from the inside out and you tend to get more goodwill repairs in the last 18mths my 2001 car has had

Two new wings
door frames painted
rear tailgate painted
rear wheel arches painted
new crossmember fitted

I reckon if i add that lot up its more than i have paid for servicing from MB since i bought the car

Plus you get breakdown cover and a replacement car if you car is sent to a dealer

I personally find the servicing work isnt that expensive from MB , its the extras and you can always do those yourself, i personally use a independant for additional work that i cant do myself

I used to do some servicing on the side years ago and had a stamp made up:) R M Autos and both phone numbers, cars mainly.

I did the work i stamped the book simple.

Even had a couple of people ring up checking the history explained what i did and everyone was happy.

I dont see a prob with it so long as you keep receipts for all parts bought as back up, evidence.

I do all my own servicing... I keep every single invoice for parts used and everything is tabulated on an excel spreadsheet.

I dont think ill ever sell any of my cars, but if I do, I hope to think its worth much more than a service stamp.

Most people would consider that the appearance of a "stamp" in the service book is proof that that a bonefide dealer or suitably equiped and knowlegable independent specialist has serviced the car. Together with detailed knowledge of recalls and manufacturer specific service equipment and tools, this business would be fully insured should something they'd done fail and cause an accident. A bonefide business would also have reputation to protect and would indeed be "sueable" in the last resort.
Some DIYer, doing a bit of servicing "on the side", regardless of talent or experience can offer none of these.

Whilst not passing judgement on anyones competancy, stamping the service book with a "faux" business stamp is, in effect, conning subsequent purchasers of the car that it has been serviced correctly and expensively.
No doubt, some dodgy dealers have their own rubber stamps and can be creative with e-bay service books.
