Guys

How accurate is star diagnosis when it suggests about replacing a part.

Got a message about EBD,ABS,ESP. Been reading the net (always a bad idea!)
Indy has diagnosed problem as ESP control unit, but reports on the net suggest otherwise.

Just curious really..............

Using STAR is about diagnosis.

The system will show the codes, how they are interpreted is the skill.

STAR is by far the best tool for MB vehicles but only as good as the person using it. As well as codes there are some guided tests for specific components that aid diagnosis

Star is the best tool to use but as always go to someone who has actually done this work. All too often there are those prolific on the internet that frequently get things wrong, offer bad advice and have never actually done the work at all. They sit there with a pirated copy of WIS dishing out information they know nothing about.

So always go to someone who HAS rather than some who has just READ.

100% agree.

The indy who is looking at it for me is a good guy, with a very good reputation locally.
I'm just curious as to how accurate STAR is when it says to replace something

My Indy uses the proper star system.
Last year my gearbox lost drive. Plugged star in and it said faulty wheel speed sensor. Replaced the sensor , car fixed.
I don't get your angle here ? The dealer has the same set up.

Some faults throw up codes that are not so simple to diagnose. For example limp mode in some diesels, can throw up a 'MAF' code. Could be a split pipe, or maybe a simple sticky/clogged EGR as the car is thrown into limp via the MAF but not actually a faulty MAF.

Inexperienced mechanics could easily advise to change the MAF and EGR (at your cost) and still not solve the problem.

No angle, nothing underhanded.
Just wondering how accurate.

Grand, well you know the user - Creevy's

Indeed...saved my brother a fortune last week when Agnew's quoted £500 for a rear light cluster...he paid £20 for Steven's repair.
