can anyone help me out,i'm having problems with my c200 mercedes, fitted new starter motor and car still wont start just getting a click when turning the key. i bridged the solonoid and the engine turned

Get someone to turn the key whilst you check with a meter to see if you have power to the solenoid. If there is power to the solenoid, and it is not engaging, the solenoid is faulty.

If there is no power to the solenoid, you will have to work your way backwards.

I had this problem a few years ago, and it turned out to be a broken wire within the insulation that was intermittantly connecting....took ages to find it :)

thanx desilva i'll check that and let you know how i get on.cheers

Which model of or what age C class.? Some cars have the solenoid actuated directly from the ignition switch, other from the engine ECU.
If you have a regular metal key it's the old type and from the switch, if the electronic key it's from the ECU in which case check the fuses and key switch are working.

hi dieselman its 1998 c200 with the electronic key, when you turn the key you can hear a click from the starter & from the relay in the elec/box under the bonnet n/s bulkhead area?

Just check the fuses and relay, after that clean the key and barrel lens. If that fails suspect the ignition switch (EIS) is faulty.

I think you have a possible fault with the K40/4 relay.

It is located in the module box on the right side as you look under the bonnet. Not expensive at 50 or so quid I think.

cheers blackc55 i'll give it a check today or tomorow when i get a chance

what does the K40/4 relay look like?and is their anyway to check it.

I had the same prob a while ago.The only thing was that - cable on batery was lose

I had similar symptoms on my 500SE. The battery was said to have been checked, but a few months later it was found to be faulty. A new battery solved it.

One of the connectors has a purple wire connected to it and it has a load of fuses and one relay on it.

You can't really check it. Just check the fuses first.

hi black c55 i found the K40/4 relay and checked all the fuses, fuses are ok, i checked and found that their is no power from the purple wire to the solonoid when cranking the engine, when i put power down the purple wire the engine will turn over but not start.

thanx checked cables
