E55k AMG Sold / S211 E320 CDI I6 sold W212 E63 6.2 N/A saloon. S212 e250 cdi .
The started motor has seized on my e250 cdi. It looks a tricky type of a job. Needing accessibility from the top and bottom of the engine. It would definitely help if had the access to a lift, which I don't have. It would be an axel stand job if I were to do it myself.

On the opinion of the MB forum members what sort of price should I expect to pay to have the starter motor replaced.

Have any owners replaced the starter motor on the 651 engine.

Thanks

No idea on cost but is a pain of a job.
Needs the filter box, brackets, the dpf and the cat removed.
Nothing too difficult, just time consuming.

It does seem an awkward part to get to, without removing the parts you have mentioned. I might have to try tackle this one myself.

Anyone suggest a how to guide on this one. Haynes manual possibly or a different guide.

Thanks

One thing to remember is to get the DPF out from below car would need to be raised quite a bit. Might really be best on a lift.

I've just replaced the one on my C220 CDI estate, we needed 8 socket extensions to do it. It was fairly simple once we located the bolt and guided it through but a pig of a job.

Compared to everything else we did on the car, it would be a job I'd get a garage to do if I was doing it again.

No lift I'm afraid I wish I had. It would make it so much easier.

So I've stripped everything out. I can see the starter motor now from the engine bay. I'm not sure on location on the holding in bolts of the SM. Could someone possibly post a picture of the exact location if possible it would be much appreciated. Also does it matter what wires are removed from the SM first or it doesn't matter like wise when installing. I have the negative terminal of the main battery disconnected when I am working on the car.

It's two bolts I think for the SM. What size, type socket is it?

Thanks

The starter bolts are accessed from underneath after removing the DPF.

Remove any cables, just make sure battery is disconnected.

DPF removed, so I have to access from underneath ok thanks.

I've got the bottom bolt off nearest to the ground. The poxy transmission pipe I think it is and the oil sump pipe are making life very difficult.

Could you give me some advice please on best way to remove the top bolt on the SM. The DPF/CAt heat shielding material is also in the way.

New one should be here tomorrow or Wednesday, one of the exhaust bolts just snapped when removing one of the clamps so I have ordered a new one from MB Newcastle, that will be here Wednesday or Thursday. Getting the two SM bolts back in I will need to get some different type of sockets extensions. Is there socket thats angled more or less right back on it self. No room at all in there. I had to false back one of the oil pipes to get a little extra room. It's out anyhow. We move on!

Flexible extensions any good?

Waiting on part to refit!

Received the SM part 6pm this evening, had a go at fitting all seems well.

how do I know the SM pinion gear is meeting with the flywheel gear correctly?

I take it the exhaust cat and dpf should all be installed and bolted up before I was to try if the new SM is working?

I should add it fitted in its position like the previous part did. I tightend it up.as good as I could. Seemed solid with a good grab hold of. I assume the part wouldn't fit if it wasn't positioned correctly?

Would I do harm to the car/ECU if I were to try to start the car without the dpf installed. It's for two reasons. One, to see if the new SM is working. Two, to move the car higher on the ramps to have better access to install the dpf?

Wouldn't do any permanent damage but may throw codes that need cleared.

All top of engine compartments, brackets all fixed back on. The bolt that broke on the exhaust clamp the other day when taking off is my only hold up right now 😡. Can glady say the car starts up on the button with the new SM installed. This clamp that ties the cat and the dpf together doesn't seem wide enough to fix over each section of pipe. So near to finished but yet still not over the finished line. Jesus Christ for the use of a lift. The two pipes are lining up perfectly but I just can't get the clamp with no bolt to fix properly securing both together. Was going to use tieing wire for now just to put system all back. And hope the new
Clamp I ordered from MB Newcastle arrives ASAP.

Any universal clamps that would fit, available from euro car parts or some where like that

I would like to add, I don't intend in driving the car with no proper clamps in place it was purely to test the running of the car after having the bits and pieces removed from it
