Starting problem

I have an old w639 vito van (55 reg) and have started to have problems starting it. 9 times out of 10 it'll start and run no problem, but every now and then it just won't start and has twice cut out while driving. Anyone else had this problem? It has new filters, battery, belts etc.
I've been told it sounds like a high pressure fuel pump problem but can't get anyone to have a look at it for a couple of weeks. Is there anything I can check in the meantime?

What engine it is? Diesel cold starting problem are most often injector leak related. Easy to diagnose my measuring tank line leaks. Also if you have any OBD device which can read basic live data, rail pressure reading can pin point is it fuel or electrical source...

Its a diesel 2.1. It never seems to have a problem starting in the morning, just now and then during the day. Started and ran fine 4 times yesterday, then took me 30 mins to start it on leaving work.
